Vanity: Who Remembers The POTUS Election of 1972? I Do! Is History About To Repeat?

It was a year of one radical leftist demonstration after another. McGovern became their darling, promising $1,000 a year to every man, woman, and child in America. The rest of his platform was the list the left would have given to Santa if he would listen to such naughty boys and girls. McGovern rode the wave of protest all the way to the Democratic convention and to the nomination. Meanwhile, the Yippies (Youth International Party) did everything they could to disrupt the Republican convention. I remember live TV coverage showing a Yippie crowd blocking the way for a bus of GOP delegates as a protester opened the engine compartment and cut one of the hoses to the engine, disabling the bus. With the help of the police the convention was held and Nixon was renominated.

McGovern's campaign was tied to the ultra-left at the ankle, knee, hip, side, shoulder, and head. He was theirs and they were his. The polls immediately showed Nixon with a double digit lead. Watergate happened because the Nixon camp could not believe that McGovern was really that stupid. He had to have a secret plan to spring at the last minute, so a stupid stunt was given the go-ahead. They were caught and the polls didn't budge. McGovern tried to capitalize on it and it didn't work for him.

Yet, despite the polls, the leading leftists refused to believe that it was possible for McGovern to lose. Election day saw 49 of 50 states vote for Nixon.

Now we again are seeing widespread demonstrations by the ultra-left, with demands so extreme that they would completely collapse the American economy and likely the world's economy with it. Leftist demonstrators aren't patient folks. If they don't get their way immediately they are prone to turn violent. We are already beginning to see this. By the middle of 2012, if the trend continues, we may against see demonstration and riots like we did in 1972. And again the Democratic Party has yoked itself to them.

In 1972 we saw local Democrats that were up for election distancing themselves from the top of the ticket, sometimes even repudiating it. We are starting to see the same thing as some Democrats flee Obama.

Are we indeed about see a repeat of 1972? The OWS demonstrators may be God's gift to the GOP. One can certainly hope.

In 1971, Senator Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts proposed a plan for universal federally run health insurance, partly motivated by dramatic rises in public and private health care expenditures. In response, Nixon proposed a health care plan which would provide insurance for low-income families, and require that all employees be provided with health care. As this still would have left some forty million people uncovered, Kennedy and the other Democrats declined to support it, and the measure failed, though a Nixon proposal for increased use of health maintenance organizations passed Congress in 1973.[153]

There is the potential for a real parallel. These leftists are delusional enough to think that televised violence against the established order will evoke support from the rest of "the 99%." A few more televised chants from skinny-ass white mind-numbed masses will cause revulsion, not support.

Nixon implemented the Philadelphia Plan in 1970—the first significant federal affirmative action program.[160] He also endorsed the Equal Rights Amendment after it passed both houses of Congress in 1972 and went to the states for ratification.[161] Nixon had campaigned as an ERA supporter in 1968,

With Nixon instead of McGovern? You betcherass we were better off. McGovern was a full fledged socialist in the control of hard leftwing totalitarians not unlike the crackpot left we deal with today.

There are many more of “them” now than there were then. That’s the progression we’ve been on for decades which is now approaching the final stage of the marxist takeover. It’s good to be old, we’ve experienced the easiest existence in the history of man...and listen to us bitch. More’s the pity.

He also instituted wage and price controls, killed the last three Apollo missions and was responsible for the space shuttle being outfitted with solid boosters because the development costs were allegedly cheaper.

McGovern’s “$1000 giveaway” eventually made it into law as the “Earned Income Credit” (which was greatly expanded by Reagan in 1986).

Convention disruptions were planned by both sides. Do you recall CREEP’s plans to disrupt the Democratic Convention in Miami, including and acquiring building plans to learn how to sabotage the air conditioning systems?

I think that Barry will come close to being taken out of office and would dare not run.

McGovern was also a decorated bomber pilot in WWII.

At the very least, his patriotism shouldn’t be in question (compared to those in power today).

Yes, you raise good points and I’ve wondered about the parallels. The difference is Nixon was in power in 72, so the left had a Republican president as a bogeyman. Right now the liberal/socialists are sort of deprived of that with one of their own in charge.

The unfortunate thing is, the loonier the left gets with these sorts of occupysuchandsuch protests, the more likely it is Romney wins the nomination. The more disruptive and dangerous the anti-American radicals become, the more Republicans will be inclined to default to the person they judge the most likely to beat Hussein - even if that person is not a real conservative. As Mitt is very polished and has been running for president forever, I think his odds get stronger if the country seems to be descending into chaos. People gets scared and flee to safety. Romney is probably glad to see this stuff.

I was just finishing up college and of course most of my classmates were strong for McG. One in particular who drove me nuts with his constant blathering about McG as the Savior (sound familiar?) of America from the eeeviiillll Nixon. I was very happy to send in my absentee ballot and cancel out his vote. Remember what McG said about quitting Vietnam and how he'd handle the POW release? He basically said he'd go to Hanoi and beg on his knees for the POWs to be sent home. That cinched it for me and many others. We couldn't feature the thought of an American President grovelling before foreign leaders. Strangely sad and depressing that 40 years later we'd have precisely that, and few seem to have a problem with it.

As I recall, most of the MSM too backed or gave firm indication they backed McGovern, so nothing has changed in that regard.

What HAS changed is the piss-poor knowledge of the electorate. The Left has had ample time and opportunity, and little opposition, to their take-over and usurpation of the entire US Education System. The ant-hill accretion of the populous into the cities, and the give-aways to the have-nots, coupled with the infection of the community organizers, has made a ready source of blind followers for whoever they perceive to be their Santa Clause.

We might win this one, but as long as you allow the Congressional Black Communists and like groups to hold sway over a third or better of the legislators and bureaucrats we'll never make it to the next century.

God save America!

Now that promise would get my vote!

(If only Federal payments were limited to $1000/year/person!)
