Syracuse University associate head basketball coach Bernie Fine was fired Sunday in the wake of an investigation of child molestation allegations against him.

In statement released Sunday night, Kevin Quinn, the school's senior vice president for public affairs, says Fine has been "terminated, effective immediately.

The move came at the direction of Chancellor Nancy Cantor.

The 65-year-old Fine was in his 36th season at his alma mater. He had the longest active streak of consecutive seasons at one school among assistant coaches in Division I.

Fine's firing comes in the wake of new revelations Sunday, including a third accuser.

Two former Syracuse ball boys were the first to accuse Fine, who has called the allegations "patently false."

That was incredibly damning. Heard about it yesterday. Wow.

I love sports, but they are unfortunately a great hunting ground for pedophiles. Coaches have an almost god-like influence over kids, and often have significant access to them when parents aren’t around or when parents are too heavily involved in a talented child’s career prospects to wake up and smell the coffee. Anyone who wants to coach at any level should pass a bg check and have to pass a psych profile.

Sheldon Kennedy, a hockey player who was abused by a coach throughout his teen years, is one of the major proponents of reform in the world of coaching.

That wife is one cruel, sick excuse of a human being. To allow the raping of boys by her husband for what? Convenience?

Are you suggesting that SU jumped the gun and fired him for no reason? I suspect they gave it more due diligence than that.

“There’s still one sport that’s sane as far as behavior of fans and players, in college, the minors and the Pros...hockey.”

Gotta agree that hockey is (at least relatively) an improvement over most of the other big-time sports. And to me, that’s pretty amazing - I can remember back to the “Broad Street Bullies” days of the Philadelphia Flyers, when pro hockey was pretty much the WWF on ice skates, and after that, I pretty much quit following it for several decades.

And then when the Blackhawks made their run for the Cup two years back, I started watching again, and couldn’t believe how beautifully-played the game had become, especially at the playoff-level.

I love to point out the contrast to soccer, which is essentially the same game (put an object past a keeper into a net) - you can get more action in less than a minute of a good hockey game than you see in a whole damn soccer match. (Although I will admit at least in this country soccer is still relatively clean, which isn’t too tough to arrange when hardly anybody watches it).

She waited until the boy was 18 though.

So all boys should suffer because a few perverts act out?

Sports programs are wonderful. It’s the perverts who suck.. Excuse the pun. What you said is the same argument gun control activists use. Shame on you.

“That will clear the Division 1-A coaching ranks pretty quickly.”

I quit watching (except hockey) Division 1 sports long ago. Just filled with too much corruption. Players bribed, grades fixed, coaches are gods, etc. Now I just watch Division 2 and 3 sports. Much more entertaining and enjoyable.

The big thing is that hockey players rarely have any of the off ice (or off field) issues we see in other sports. Aside from Bob Probert and Theo Fleury, I’m hard pressed to find any hockey criminals in the past 20 years.

So true. I live in a town with an NHL team, an MLS team and a college football factory.

Thank God for hockey.

Hockey players commit their crimes right there in the ring. Assault with a deadly weapon, battery, inciting a riot, attempted manslaughter etc.

Women, mothers, must learn to love and protect the innocence of their sons like they do their daughters.

Feminists have put an unholy wedge between males and females - between mothers and sons - that does not belong.

Normal boys are innocent inside just like normal girls are. They don't have the innate power to deal with aggressive and manipulative perverts any more than girls do.

Let's hope you're right. Just remember how Duke threw the lacrosse coach under the bus.
