Abbreviated title: The 'Pompeii' of the Western Front: Archaeologists find the bodies of 21 tragic World War One German soldiers in perfectly preserved trenches where they were buried alive by an Allied shell
The bodies of 21 German soldiers entombed in a perfectly preserved World War One shelter have been discovered 94 years after they were killed.
The men were part of a larger group of 34 who were buried alive when a huge Allied shell exploded above the tunnel in 1918, causing it to cave in.
Thirteen bodies were recovered from the underground shelter, but the remaining men had to be left under a mountain of mud as it was too dangerous to retrieve them.
Nearly a century later, French archaeologists stumbled upon the mass grave on the former Western Front in eastern France during excavation work for a road building project.

bRATwurst?
WWI ping
Let’s just say everyone was a victim of overweening familial protocols of the very powerful rulers.
After all - why is anyone involved in this travesty outside Austria-Hungary and a few Serbs? Think about it. This war was asinine, and honestly no regular WWI soldier should have so much venom directed at him.
Anyone ever hear of the 1914 Christmas celebration? Before you harshly deride the German “enemies”, learn a bit about this affair, not to mention the whole damned war.
And I wasn't deriding the German soldiers. I was being supportive of rendering them due military honors.
But anyone we fight against is a bastard. English in 1776, Mexico in 1846, Germans in 1918, and again in 1941. &ct... ;)

We joke...but thinking about the barbaric conditions these/all combatants had to endure, overwhelms.
Cheers!
Thanks for the ping. This is an interesting find, and the photos are very good.
I was in HS when I read *Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front.* It moved me deeply.
My neighbor's father was an American that served in WWI, married a french girl and stayed in France until he and the family escaped to Texas toward the end of WWII.
He tells the stories that his father told him about WWI. The gas, the horror. And the funny stuff, too.
He also tells the stories of his experiences during WWII as a young man in France.
War Sucks. No two ways around it.
BTW, I really shouldn't be giving sommelier advice. I just had the basics in culinary school. I'm better at giving zymurgy advice.
With rat, I would select a dark bock.

War does suck.
Well, they would of been dead by now anyway!
Or else, they might have reproduced and burden the world with even more of those troublesome British royals!
Rats, lice, dysentery, trench foot. Dead from any number of diseases.
Did they have “Arbeit macht frei” posted over the Juden portion of the trenches?
Revolting bunch of comments by my fellow FReepers on this one. They were fighting men who died honorably for their country almost a century ago, and they deserve much more than what I have seen here. They were not savage Muslim Jihadis.
