The Car

The Car is a good example of how restraint in the horror genre can work. It honors the tradition of real suspense movies by hinting at more than it shows, and inferring more than it explains. From the cryptic opening quote by Anton Le Vey to the ending in which the two main characters disagree on whether this is really the end, this "demon car" film keeps asking more questions than it answers. For some, this will bring frustration, for others, it makes the movie that much more fascinating. The "body count" is a total of 10 people, with no explicit scenes. And there are no "anonymous" killings. Each victim is named and acknowledged as a real human being and a loss. This is a refreshing departure from gore-fests. I'd rate it a 7 1/2.

Are you the one who posted a reference to the "Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone (1983)" movie with Molly Ringwold a few days ago?

I dl'd that and watched it. It was surprisingly entertaining.

I liked this film; it’s somewhat underrated, and easily dismissed as a schlock-fest. It’s not bad as horror films, especially from the supernatural horror genre. And c’mon; who wouldn’t love to actually own a car that looks like that?

A horror film I’ve recently seen, from the supernatural horror genre, which I found very good is a J-Horror film called, “Noroi”. It’s one of the films I’ve seen which genuinely made my skin crawl.

Somehow this subject came up in a recent conversation, and I mentioned ‘The Car’. The ending gave me nightmares for years.

That movie singlehandedly killed off the ridiculous Superfly retro kitsch that was so popular at the time. I wonder what sort of vehicle.was the basis for that dreadnought Monte Carlo? There’s a hint of late sixties Lincoln in the wheelbase and lower body, but that can’t be it, the unibody on those was notoriously flexible, to the point that doors would jam if you had to jack it up yourself to change a flat.

My best friend and I lived about a half a mile from one another. Our treks back and forth from house to house were never the same after seeing that movie. ; )

Must’ve slapped a truck frame under it or something, that or built twenty of them.
