Vanity: Sustainable cities & "collective intelligence technologies"

While doing my morning sustainability research i found myself coming across Siemens website, which has done a little updating since my last visit.

Within moments i found myself in a .pdf on "smart" neighborhoods to come in NYC, and one of the major subjects discussed is "community intelligence". This raised a brow obviously.

A snip:

"Being a part of a community meets a basic human need. Knowing your surroundings, having access to relevant local information, and feeling closely connected to your neighborhood—and to the City—builds trust. As New York City continues to grow, residents are at risk of losing their sense of community. Community Intelligence represents a unique solution to meet our basic need for community in the digital age. By linking multiple sources of information—mobile phones, computers, and information displays—in a useful, personalized and interactive way, we enable more meaningful connections to the City while building a greater sense of community."

Interesting. So you want me to plug myself into the "smart grid" eh? Not bloody likely. I wonder if opting out will have any adverse effects on my day to day life?

I wanted to get a little more info the background on this "community intelligence" concept. What exactly is this going to do to make things sustainable? Sounds more like being assimilated by the Borg to me.

Googling "Siemens" and "community intelligence" brought me to the doorstep of Community Intelligence Ltd., headed (i think) by a man by the name of George Por; who lists Siemens as one of his clients, and was gracious enough to compose a .pdf on the philosophy and mechanics of "collective intelligence". Notice the word change there? It went from community to collective pretty quickly.

Anyway, i thought that others may find this read interesting.

If I had Zyklon B associated with my name I would stay away from any implication of being for social engineering.
