Oldest Pearl in Human History Found in UAE … From a Grave

Researchers have discovered the world’s oldest natural pearl in Umm Al Quwain, UAE, which is believed to be originated between 5547 and 5235 BC, Discovery News said in a report.

The report said that the pearl was discovered not from the sea but grave. Researchers said that findings at local necropolis revealed that pearls were often placed on the deceased's face, often above the upper lip.

The research was carried out by French researchers. The discovery suggests that pearl oyster fishing first started in Gulf Arab peninsula not in Japan - as previously believed by researchers.

In 5,000 BC, half-drilled pearls were associated with men and full-drilled with women, research showed. Pearls still hold an important place in Arab world. Even today they remain central, identifying “element”, the researchers said in the note.

According to Discovery News, the pearl is 0.07 inches in diameter and is fully intact.

If the pearl was placed on the upper lip what was the origin of the tradition? Crossing the river Styx and paying the ferryman?

at 2mm, that would actually be a pretty small kideny stone. I have had them up to 9mm.

That’s a teeny pearl, a seed pearl, just 4mm in the long dimension, or ~ .16”, less than 1/6”.

I think there was a recent story about a fossilized pearl, perhaps in Arabia, much bigger than this one.

What is a fossilized pearl? I mean, how does it become fossilized? If it no longer consists of pearl, what does it become? Is it the same mechanism that forms other fossils, erosion displacement?

I’m serious, Mr. Civilizations. I’ve never heard of that happening to pearls.

Thanks, that’s very interesting. It actually would be very tiny going by actual pearl sizes. No chart I found showed below a 6mm size.
