Avengers' Director Whedon Goes On Anti-Capitalist Rant
Breitbart.com ^ | 7/14/2012 | John Nolte

Posted on 07/15/2012 11:19:44 AM PDT by Beave Meister

So says the guy probably worth somewhere around a gajillion dollars and who likely made somewhere around a thousand times more money from "Avengers" than anyone on the crew.

But Whedon's obviously talking about socialism for, you know, other people:

“We are watching capitalism destroy itself right now,” [Whedon] told the audience.

He added that America is “turning into Tsarist Russia” and that “we’re creating a country of serfs.”

Whedon was raised on the Upper Westside neighborhood of Manhattan in the 1970s, an area associated with left-leaning intellectuals. He said he was raised by people who thought socialism was a ''beautiful concept."

Socialism remains a taboo word in American politics, as Republicans congressmen raise the specter of the Cold War. They refer to many Obama administration initatives as socialist, and the same goes for most laws that advocate increasing spending on social welfare programs. They also refer to the President as a socialist, though this and many of their other claims misuse the term.

This evidently frustrates Whedon, who traces this development to Ronald Reagan[.]

We have people trying to create structures and preserve the structures that will help the middle and working class, and people calling them socialists,” Whedon said. “It’s not Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal […] it’s some people with some sense of dignity and people who have gone off the reservation.”

Great idea. Let's start with Hollywood!

Hillaire Belloc and GK Chesterton made the point (100 years ago) that socialism was tyranny and was not a moral system, and not a solution to the world's problems. Likewise, they made the point that capitalism would tend inevitably to something that called the Servile State, which we would probably call fascism.

We're not going to get anywhere as long as we continue to use Marx's terms. It's not "capitalism" vs "socialism". It's "free market" vs "command economy".

The distinguishing characteristic of the free market is that it is free: somebody has some good or service he thinks people will want to buy, he produces it, and hopefully people will freely buy it. If he's right, then he gets money to try other ideas.

The distinguishing characteristic of the "command economy" (socialism) is that you have government deciding what they want people to be doing, and use the force of government (regulation, taxes, subsidies, incentives) backed by people with guns to make it happen. Being a winner in a command economy doesn't come from being right about what people want, it comes from being buddies with the people who run government.

It's freedom vs being a slave to the government. Let's get our terms right.

Belloc and Chesterton discussed Distributism. It's an economic system based on property ownership. It focuses on individualism and personal responsibility. It opposes big government and big business -- arguing, in fact, that big business is only really possible if big government provides subsidies, or tax breaks, or regulations which allow one enterprise to dominate over all others within a particular market -- it is wrong, in other words, for government to pick winners and losers. If government stays small, business cannot get truly big and oppressive.

Distributists say that they like the free market just fine. But that capitalism is not really an example of the free market, because capitalism necessarily depends on a "helpful" political climate.

Not everyone likes Distributism (it didn't catch on circa 1910 either) but I think it is worth knowing about.

I would also make this point:
Conservatives laugh at socialists. The socialists say, "Sure, Socialism didn't really work in Russia. Or China. Or Cuba. Or this place. Or that place. But it will surely work in the next place. We will just do socialism better -- next time!"

We laugh at that and we (rightly) call it insanity.

But where has capitalism remained capitalism?? Sure, it works well for awhile, but then we get Woodrow Wilson, or FDR, or LBJ, or Clinton or Obama -- and little buy little our "capitalism" starts to look a lot like socialism, doesn't it? This is what happened in England, in Germany, in America -- just about everywhere capitalism is put in place, over time it ends up looking like socialism.

And we tell ourselves that capitalism will work out fine -- and will stay capitalism -- next time.

I say that capitalism contains an inherent and inevitable tendency to turn into the Servile State. The free market (I think) works. Capitalism doesn't.

Another Hollywood millionaire who makes his money on name and face recognition pushing a system where we would all be poor faceless nobodies.

Well - since guys like this are running every level of our government, why not?

Now go pay your taxes - your government is broke. :)

He added that America is “turning into Tsarist Russia” and that “we’re creating a country of serfs.”

Yet another near perfect example of leftist projection.

He rants against capitalism, which as made him and many others millions. Capitalism has created in this republic the greatest economy the world has ever known.

He praises socialism (communism) as being the great savior of civilization.

Every example of socialist and communist government has ended with collapse and ruin. It is the very thing he praises that creates "serfs."

He can't or intentionally refuses to see that.

I have posted this a few times, this clown's spewing is a good example so here we go again.

They are beyond help, they do not have the capacity to be educated out of communism disguised as "liberalism and progressiveness." They can not or refuse to see the destructive nature of the communism disguised as "liberalism and progressiveness" they promote.

What the supporters of communist "liberalism and progressiveness" will destroy is the very nation that gave them their freedom. They will complain, demonize, belittle and protest when opposed but only preserving this Republic in it’s original context will continue to give them their freedom to complain and protest against it.

They will not stop destroying this nation of their own accord.

The only way to preserve freedom for American Citizens in this Republic is suppression of the communist supporters. "Taking the high road" is rapidly becoming something to be put on the shelf for a while. It is now time to step up, get in their face and refuse any other narrative other than they are worthless communist agenda bastards undeserving of a place in this Republic.

Worthless communist agenda bastards undeserving of a place in this Republic.

So, how?

One battle at a time and they will kick, scream, curse and fight the return of their freedom and sane behavior every inch of the way. If some semblance of our former Republic can be restored they will require constant observation. The communists will revert to demanding total control faster than can be understood by rational thought as rational thought is not understood by communists.

The supporters of communist "liberalism and progressiveness" will NEVER be normal freedom loving American Citizens. It is my understanding of history that not that long ago American Citizens put freedom before communism and put communist traitors in jail.

Worked once, ought to work again.

The libertarian slant on Firefly came from his partner in the production, Tim Minear. Whedon does great dialogue and group dynamics, but can’t plot his way out of a wet paper bag. . .

Scarlett Johansson isn’t going to be worrying about money any time soon. Her payday for Marvel’s planned Avengers 2 puts her at the top of the highest female earners in Hollywood, as the studio pledges to cash out $20 million to the buxom beauty to get her to reprise her role in the hotly anticipated sequel.

Sounds like Socalism

"Serenity" was on earlier today. He knows what sells. The River Tam response in the beginning "We tell them what to think, what to eat,...we're in their heads..." is describing the utopia that Whedon is apparently desiring, regardless that his "art" the cheers on the opposite.

Well truth is it was not a rant. It was a brief answer to a question asked by a member of SDCC. But likewise this is what he believes. And we disagree.

AdamsBaldwin, who was also on the Firefly panel did tweet “
If America is turning into ‘Tsarist Russia’ under Obama, then the only viable alternative in November is @MittRomney. What’s Left to ponder?”

How is the term MISUSED when referring to obama?

Because he hasn't nationalized the means of production.

Oh, . . . never mind.

Whedon is a left-wing nutbag of the highest order. He’s also extremely pro-homosexual in every way and seeks to insert that sort of thing into whatever he does. I can’t even stand to hear that smarmy, arrogant sissy boy speak.

That is very disappointing, as well as mildly surprising. I thought "Firefly" had a libertarian slant to it. Guess I was wrong.

I would say that it does. In fact it is downright disdainful of government. That doesn't necessarily make Whedon a libertarian of course.

Would Whedon agree that copyright laws protecting intellectual “property” are a Bourgeois invention and all entertainment belongs to the collective?

Sometimes I imagine these folks’ fantasies would come true and their socialist dreams would materialize, only so their own rewards as useless idiots would actually transpire.

If he is so anti-capitalist, maybe he can just release all his movies to be seen free and copied and distributed at will.
