I have been getting some nice rains for the last few weeks but it looks like the rains are gone and the heat has arrived for good. My tomatoes have shut down producing and I will have to nurse them through this heat until it cools off a bit.
I’m in the midsummer “tomatoes won’t set fruit” doldrums here in NW Florida. It’s so hot and humid that it’s just not fun to be outside and I am doing the minimum necessary to keep the garden going. I have watermelons, cantaloupes, peppers, herbs, long beans, tomatillos, sunflowers, and okra that are still going strong, but I am starting to think forward to the fall garden more and more.
I have a replacement crop of cucumbers started, pumpkins (C. moschata types) just starting to run, and some new pepper and eggplant transplants to add to my garden. I’ve just started tomatoes for the fall garden. I really hope they do better than the spring tomatoes! It’s too early to start the cool weather crops, but I am beginning to plan where they’ll go and when to get them started.
However, I haven’t given up on the summer garden entirely. I just planted two tomato plants that are supposed to be heat-setting varieties. Maybe they will give me some fruits to tide me over until the fall crop comes in.
We planted 3 peach and 3 plum trees last week. We already have a row of apple trees behind the greenhouse that went in the ground this past spring. More grapes are also in future plans.
JustaDumbBlonde - I think you really need to change your screen name. I does you no credit. Every time I see pictures of your accomplishments, I am amazed (and envious!). I really like the bed you erected around the tree. To tell the truth, you've motivated me to look for a larger property where I can expand my orchard.
Mr. tubebender - I'm drooling over your raspberry patch. ;)
Oshkalaboomboom - I had to look in my kitchen to make sure my dryer was still there! Those things are great! We've dryed or canned about 15 quarts of peppers this year. My Tabasco "tree" produces for 10 months of the year. We generally dry our tabasco peppers, but have had some start fermenting in a storage jar. Talk about yummy! We mashed them, added some vinegar and a dash of salt and enjoyed the flavor.
Putting in fall crops - beets, turnips, lettuce, baby bok choy.
Got peppers out the wazoo. Swimming in eggplant as well. Tomatoes are decent this year, still waiting for the beefsteaks to kick in.
Dug up the last of the Yukon Golds, still have a row of Red Bliss in the ground.
Finally coming on!
Fingerlakes area of NY here! Getting zukes like crazy; my cucumbers and pumpkins went in late. I”m trying ARTICHOKES for the first time (imperial star) and have gotten some buds. Planted asparagus crowns in LATE fall last year. Letting it grow into feathery ferns this year.
Cherry tomatoes are starting to ripen; it’s been pretty dry here; got 1/2 inch rain last night from tstorms. Pruned my raspberries back for a 2nd crop. Blackberries are ripening. I have two cold frames for lettuce/parsnips/radishes and hopefully leeks. I dried some chives on my dashboard of the car using a foil lined metal pan. I also have a euro type stove with convection and a dehydration setting (Bosch) Ancho peppers are doing well. I’m trying thai peppers for the first time this year. Early corn went in late and it’s knee high. Green beans are in.
Purchased a new canning pot this year for tomatoes, apples, etc.
