'The Olympics has destroyed womanhood': Columnist provokes storm...'chestless, manlike' competitors

A Turkish newspaper columnist has been heavily criticised after writing an article which said the Olympic Games is destroying the female figure.

The piece - called "Womanhood is Dying at the Olympics"... soon spread around the world by saying the Games was distorting women's bodies ....

'Their breasts – the symbol of womanhood, motherhood – flattened into stubs as they were seen as mere hindrances to speed.

'I am not even talking about female javelin throwers, shot-put athletes, weightlifters, wrestlers and boxers.' He added that the appearance of many female Olympians was 'pathetic'.

Following the publication of the article, Mr Aytug was strongly criticised by people on Twitter and his own female colleagues.

So glad that in modern America no woman is cheated on or beaten any more.

Seriously, both those pathologies are surely MORE prevalent today than in our grandmothers days—that’s not glamorizing that era, as I’m not saying things were great then....just facing facts.

Is involvement in healthy extra-curricular activity like sports a good thing? Sure, to a degree.

It can also become a god.... (look at MEN’s football at Penn State.....)

ALL of our grandmothers were, MUCH “less likely to do drugs, get pregnant as a teen, and do better academically” than even female athletes today.... even with the discrimination and hard-times they faced.

Why is that?

“... all women are built differently”.

I was over hearing a pre-teen conversation between my daughter and several of her friends. These girls were complaining they didn’t look like this star or that girl”. A complete focus on external qualities... nothing relevant to “who” they were. My daughter told them, “My Mom told me that God made women in all sorts of sizes, lengths and colors. Some are heavy, some are thin. Some are tall and some are short. But, He made them all perfect”.

There is so much focus on breast size with this thread. God designed breasts to feed an infant. I’ve known women that are small and some that are naturally quite large. I would rather women be confident with their natural body than to have silicone implants so they can be seen as “beautiful”.

You are right... women being able to be prim and proper, athletic, or somewhere in between is what makes America great. Every person is born with a natural talent of some sort. If that is athleticism, then I see that as a gift. (No different than any other gift we can be born possessing). One gift shouldn’t be ignored if a few call it “unfeminine”. IMHO.

Today's women athletes seem to be competing with the men on the sidelines rather than the women in their class, it seems that the more masculine they act, the more they can prove their equality. Sad, really.

Bingo.

Perhaps you just cannot address a question. Please address the question.

Let me spell it out for you slowly: why do we segregate the sexes in the Olympics? Can you handle that? take a deep breath and try.

As for your dodge: yes indeed weight lifting, boxing, have weight classes - why not let all in those weight divisions, men and women, vie for qualification and then if they make the cut compete in the games?

I bet you won't answer.

While it is noticeable how many of the Olympic women are small breasted—and that was a main part of the article—but that hasn’t been what I’ve been trying to discuss. I know every woman is different in her body type, and that’s a good and godly thing.

My main point was to comment about the radical nature of feminism—which if you reflect on it, it has affected women’s athletics and the Olympics. Some for good....but often not.

It DOES seem to me that many women athletes I’ve seen on TV are not at all feminine behaving (including large-breasted Venus Williams), and related to that...that femininity in women generally is not valued or encouraged in Western culture today.

I haven’t intended to be personally offensive to you, and I appreciate your perspective.

Perhaps you are again not smart enough to realize I DID answer the question even after spelling it out to you.

Why do we have weight classes for boxing or for MMA? Because otherwise we would never see a champion like Georges St. Pierre compete as a champion. We would never have seen Sugar Ray Leonard compete as a champion - and the world would be a much poorer place.

Maybe in idiot land only heavy weight boxers need to compete - and anyone who is physically unable to match blows with a 230 lb 6'3” bruiser should just stay on the couch.

Lightweight boxing is almost a different sport than the heavyweights - much more exciting IMHO than two big slabs of beef leaning on each other.

Luckily we don't live in idiotland - we live in a world where a man or a woman is not limited by their physicality and can train to compete to the best of their ability at a championship level.

Why? Was the answer you wanted ‘because women are not as strong and as fast as a man.’? That is an idiotic answer. A welterweight boxer is not as strong as a heavyweight boxer. Does this mean they should just stay home?

“It can also become a god”.

You really need to stay on point. First you complain that the women Olympians are flat chested, ugly and unfeminine. Then you blame STD’s, abortion, crime rate, divorce, flatulence, and bad breath on women in sports. Now sports can become “gods”? Let me make this easy for you, AR. Why don’t you say what you really, REALLY want to. Educating women is the main cause of today’s societal problems. Women were better off when they were illiterate. They “knew their place” because they couldn’t read and had to rely on the men folk if they wanted to eat. They had to focus on presenting a skinny waist and big ta tas to get a man to take care of her. When women were illiterate, society didn’t have abortion, STD’s, a crime rate, poverty or flatulence.

Nice try at the poor attempt to use MEN’s football at Penn State to hide the initial ugliness of your opinion. You don’t like women with flat chests that can perform athletically better than you. I get it.. I just don’t agree with you.

You seem to know a lot about training and athletics which is good to see. I agree with your posts.

Maybe you have a though on this... The relative poor perfomance of American men was discussed on a British forum earlier today, and I gave it some thought... Do you think the Balco scandal might have had some impact?

Cheers.

“I haven’t intended to be personally offensive to you...”

You haven’t been offensive at all. On FR, we are allowed to debate and discuss different perspectives. That’s what makes FR so great. This thread began with a link to an article about the Turk and his perspective (which you agreed with). The article discusses how the Turk believes female athletes are flat chested and “extra points should be given to female athletes based on how feminine they look”.

I agree that there are some women who don’t behave like a lady. Just as much as I will say there are some men who don’t behave like gentlemen.

If I thought what you libel me with, why would I bother to discuss things with you?

You DON’T think that Penn State cover-up illustrates how sports can become a god? Do you really think that sports are the panacea for young women?

I didn’t write the article, rather just used it as a jumping off place for discussion about feminism-related-to-sports (and the rest of our culture).

But hey, if you want to say any man who disagrees with you must be a misogynist wife-beater...that says more about you, than me.

When you're leaving it all on the field, you have to spit quite frequently depending on your sport - especially if you have allergies or a cold.

Or a person can simply swallow their saliva. The only time a person really needs to spit when out in public is if they've coughed up some phlegm, or they have a foul taste in their mouth, or they have a hair, bug, or other foreign object in their mouth. If a person spits for no other reason than to spit, the body will simply produce more saliva to replace the saliva that was expelled by the spitting, which makes the spitting a rather senseless endeavor.

You started the thread with agreeing with the article. You’ve changed your opinion throughout the thread to pump up your view. I never said that a man who disagrees with me is a wife beater. I said that sports, specifically women in sports, has nothing to do with societal ills. I said that girls who participate in a type of sport gain valuable life skills, confidence and health as a result. Perhaps you should have started the vanity thread with something like, “Do females today act more masculine than in decades past?” That would have centered more on your thought.

My thoughts on Penn State. Sure, sports can become a “god”. Just like greed. Just like acquiring wealth. Just like trying to win a Miss America title. Just like most of the activities we do. Sports (like the other examples I mentioned) have changed due to society changing. Sports didn’t change society. IMHO.

Even if there were no Olympics, so long as women are allowed to participate in men's sports the situation would be the same. The Olympics are only every four years, but these sports take place continually (we only see them here every four years).

The first women athletes were allowed in 1900, though only in a few sports like tennis. It wasn't until 1928 that women were allowed to compete in track and field events, and it's snowballed from there. The women's marathon, wrestling, boxing, weightlifting, etc, have all been more recent additions.
