Astronomy Picture of the Day -- DNA: The Molecule that Defines You
NASA ^ | August 21, 2012 | (see photo credit)

Posted on 08/20/2012 9:12:53 PM PDT by SunkenCiv

Explanation: Every living thing on planet Earth is defined by its own molecule -- what's yours? This molecule, called DNA, spans about two meters stretched out but is coiled into every cell in your body. The many copies of DNA that compose you were all copied from one single cell, and your body is continually making new copies. The above ground-breaking animated video depicts the tiny, amazing, bio-molecular machinery that makes these DNA copies. For a fee, it is now possible to find part of all of the code of the DNA molecule that defines you, but lively debates involving ethics may arise regarding whether you or anyone may own, disclose, patent, or copyright it. No one knows if DNA-like molecules will also define life that originates outside of Earth.

Exactly. God created the physical laws that made life possible.

This whole idea, the basis of Deism, was controversial in Newton's day, and found a focus in the wording of Halley's Ode To Newton, which was published with the Principia. Halley's original verse had a line expressing just what you said, that God did not set aside physical law in His Creation. This was objected to as denying "Providence" - the ongoing intervention of God in worldly events. Some busybody minister got a hand in it and altered the lines in the second addition to remove the objection, but they have since been restored.

since nothing, even on the atomic scale, would ever be able to happen without the direct intervention of God.

Or possibly it is God's existence that makes it possible for anything and everything to happen.

The quantum foam is the low hum (or OHM) of God. It is the source of energy for the entire physical universe. Without it, nothing exists.

God is many things to many people. Which seems very wise of God.

We are not flesh and blood but eternal beings.

True, but whilst we are in the physical realm, the flesh and the spirit are locked together in the same body, and usually fight a lot.

St. Paul argues that “All flesh is not the same flesh”, in support of the idea that men may be changed “in an instant” into a new form of spiritual body.

Yeah... I heard of that. Saw a movie about it.

Life does evolve. It is designed to grow.

It's beliefs of the origin of life by the evolutionists that are too far fetched to be real.

Life does not just spontaneously occur. It has to be started/planted/created.

“And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing”

If you ask me, he could have left out the ‘creeping thing’.

Because of Curiosity and its mission to find signs of life on Mars. See my previous post.

For just half your income, this poor African child can afford food, clean water, school books, and the ability to micromanage every aspect of your life.

Why is NASA calling DNA a part of Astronomy?

Because the Moon is in the seventh house, and Jupiter aligns with Mars.

It's beliefs of the origin of life by the evolutionists that are too far fetched to be real.

Oh... you mean the 'pond scum' theory. Whether God created THE WILL TO SURVIVE and instilled it into the program for each cell or God magically made all creatures appear completely assembled and programmed to also adapt, seems to make no real difference. Our beliefs, regardless to sometimes irritating facts, have nothing to do with the continual process of ADAPT OR DIE.

I bet most evolutionists (real ones, not ones on websites) would tell you that only GOD could design such an intricate, balanced, and productive of a system. It is, in a word, perfect.

Actually.... Death has to occur. Without Death there is no life. That is why it is claimed by some scientists that the first 'creature' on Earth was the virus . The Great Destroyer. The source of food for Life.

Leave it to The LORD God Almighty to make something as incredibly functional, minute, and hidden as DNA to be lovely. It looks like a beautiful necklace any lady would be happy to wear.

Viruses need host cells to reproduce. They have no ability to reproduce without hijacking a cell, turning it's mechanisms of reproduction over to the virus, which uses them to reproduce. Since it cannot reproduce without a functioning host cell it isn't possible for a virus to be the first creature; as it would have immediately gone extinct.

King David; Psalms 139:14 KJV I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

King Solomon: Proverbs 9:10 KJV The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

These men of old, men of great power and wealth, were humbled in their spirit before the God of the universe. We in our day, with our great power and wealth and depth of knowledge from the DNA and the expanse of the universe would be wise to also humble our spirits.

I wondered a similar thing, when I went to Yellowstone this spring and saw that several projects at the park were funded by NASA. Apparently, NASA funds research into extremophiles (microorganisms that live in extreme conditions, e.g. in heat or salt) as part of an effort to understand what extraterrestrial life may be like.

Whenever I have worked with DNA, it looked nothing like that picture. A small amount looks like a speck of dust. A slightly larger amount looks like a yellowish smudge on the side of a tube. I've purchased purified DNA that looked like a thick stranded cotton ball.

No one has ever seen that double helix. Much like the process of evolution, the structure of DNA was determined through indirect observation, deductive reasoning, and lots of hypothesis testing.
