'Green Lantern #0' introduces new Muslim Arab-American super hero - a major milestone in comics

Simon Baz is a Lebanese American hero from Dearborn, Michigan Meet the new Green Lantern, a Muslim-American who wears an Arabic tattoo on the same arm as his power ring.

DC Comics is introducing its newest superhero in “Green Lantern #0” Wednesday — and Simon Baz is likely to be turning comic book fans’ heads faster than a speeding bullet.

“In general, when you think about Arabs and Muslims in main roles in pop culture, they’re always the villains,” said Linda Sarsour, executive director of the Arab American Association of New York. “We're always the hijackers. We're always the bad people that the good American soldiers or CIA is trying to fight.

“To finally have the opportunity where the Arab-American can be the super hero, to be the one who saves people, is a lot more powerful an image.”

Longtime readers don’t have to panic, however: Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern usually headlining the series, wasn’t bumped off. He’s just stuck in a sort of limbo with his old frenemy, Sinestro, in an ongoing plotline.

"Simon Baz is a Lebanese American hero from Dearborn, Michigan...who wears an Arabic tattoo..."

Tattoos are haram. If this was real, his fellow muzzies would chop off the arm.

Oh dear. Didn’t the Green Lantern come out as gay a couple of months back?

Yep, he's a homo too. So he's a gay Muslim Arab American. I feel certain the Islamic community will be overjoyed at this turn of events.

He's being silly. Muslims are NEVER the villains in popular culture. It's only on the evening news that Muslims are the villains, and there the events are described as "isolated incidents".

“He’s faster than a speeding assassin’s bullt!
More powerful than a suicide bomber’s explosive dynamite belt!
Able to commit multiple honor killings in a few swipes of his sword!
Look, it’s a gorilla, it’s a neanderthal! No, it’s SUPER-TERRORIST!!!!!!!!!”

Maybe I’m being flip, but what else can I do, smash my terminal? I never imagined that the comic book industry would fall to political correctness. Things have to change soon or our very future is in doubt.

So why does someone welding the most powerful weapon in the universe need a gun?

what does he do? convince young muslims to tie bombs around themselves and blow themselves up in restaurants?

maybe he has some super powers and he does it himself and walks out unscathed?

does he behead those that disagree with him?

does he behead women that are unfaithful?

does he behead anyone that turns Christian and walks away from the false god “allah”?

if you want to portray that, make it real. muslim fairytales that they are the religion of “peace”.

Jesus said you would know them by their “fruits”.

their fruits are rotten.

sorry i am politically incorrect.

Blessings, bobo

That's what I was thinking, too.

That would pose a dilemma. Would he be required to execute his self for being gay?

I had the exact same thought when I saw the image. “You’re wearing the most powerful weapon in the universe on your right hand. Why in the world do you have a gun?”

With online printing and such nowadays, there are so many alternatives to the big names in comics, and I do think it takes a chunk out of their business, with which I’m perfectly happy. If Marvel and especially DC continue down this path, they’ll consistently lose more and more readers.

Forget about pop culture. She just described REALITY.
