Hunting has not depreciated quail populations in Texas.
What has wiped them out is fire ants.

Quail nest on the ground and fire ants wipe the chicks out.

Great Commercial from Bennett Buildings.

I agree with Billy that trout don’t live in ugly places.

I am more of a fisherman than a hunter.

Thats a long standing debate among Texas hunters. I agree the quail get hit hard by fire ants the moment they come out of the shell but we have a couple of other forces working against them with feral hogs being one and change in habitat being another. Here in West TX we don’t have a fire ant problem but we are starting to get a hog problem. another critter that place hell on baby quail is Road Runners, they eat baby quail like popcorn.

Well I have this notion for feral hogs.
Trap em, then clean em out like you kinda would a crawfish.

Put them on corn and peaches for a few weeks, then let the Charcuterie commence.

They are a pest.
Why not make lemonade of dem lemon?

I never would have thought of the road runner as an issue.
I have lived all over the west, in their habitat and the quail populations are strong.

I never really thought about what road runners eat.

But I guess if that was true I would have a ton of them RR’s around here because I have 9 banded geckos out the wazoo.

I know I got no bugs because of them geckos! LOL

I eat a few of them but ya can’t eat them all, their really becoming a problem. 50 to 75 pounders are the best eating the bigger ones end up as coyote and buzzard chow.

Everyone here just makes them into jalapeno/cheddar cheese sausage.

there has to be a better way to prepare them.

Why not feed them for a couple of weeks and then process them?
Make some Hams?

Sometimes you just got to drop them and let them rot.

It just seems like a waste, but it beats them laying waste to your property
