Chicago Teachers Union strike ends
The Hill ^ | September 18, 2012 | Daniel Strauss

The Chicago Teachers Union voted to end its strike Tuesday, concluding an episode that put President Obama in a bind between siding with a major labor union in his hometown and Rahm Emanuel, his former chief of staff and the current mayor of Chicago.

The strike's end means at least 350,000 students who had not been attending Chicago public schools for a week will return to the classroom.

The end of the strike came Tuesday afternoon after the Teachers Union's House of Delegates voted to end the dispute and accept a contract offered by the city.

Even before the union went on strike Emanuel had been working to try and find an agreement over a number of sticking points concerning pay and job security for teachers in schools that could close soon.

Nationally, the strike received attention for its location in Obama's hometown with, on one side, a labor union, a key voting bloc for the president, and Emanuel, a former top aide and a key member of Obama's reelection campaign, on the other side.

Mitt Romney also sought to use the strike to attack Obama. On the first day of the strike the Republican presidential nominee issued a blistering statement saying Obama clearly sided with unions and against the interest of students and families.

As opposed to the 350,000 students and their parents. It was between his supporters, screw the students and their families. Just like Obama's reaction to the 4 murders in Lybia... Obama called it a tough day. Or the people who claimed the SEAL raid on Bin Laden was risky... For the President!

Everything is always about him.

Not really. The contract offered was a cave-in by Emmanuel. What was going on was that the more radical union members thought Emmanuel ought to cave some more. What a bunch of tools.

Wiser heads (??????) in the union convinced the idiots that a cave-in-the-hand was worth three caves in the bush.

The whole thing was a setup for Obama to ride in on his white horse and save the day, but Rush called him on it on Day One and neutered it.

I heard before the weekend that the offer was 16% payraise over 4 years and student tests making up 40% of teacher evaluations.

After weekend negotiations the contract on the table was 7% payraise over 4 years and student tests making up 30% of teacher evaluations.

I think the teachers saw the writing on the blackboard and the uselessness of further negotiations.

Horrible reporting. Not one word about the terms of the settlement.

And if the terms were not available, the article writer should have said so.

Now Rahm, close some of those non-productive schools and throw those teachers into the unemployment line. Serves those leeches right.

Before the strike started I read that they were closing 120 schools or 20% of Chicago’s 600 schools and they were opening up 60 Magnet Schools staffed with non-union teachers.

the union got most of what they wanted....don't worry too much about them....

now, they'll proably have to start closing schools down to save money elsewhere......you know those teachers....they always do things for the "kids"...
