health vanity question about cake
me

Posted on 09/21/2012 7:03:36 PM PDT by married21

vanity question about food intolerance: What could the problem be with Costco birthday cake? I have had a piece every day since Tuesday, and have also had miserable chest discomfort/gas/burping discomfort almost immediately afterwards. Which ingredient could be the culprit? The shortening in the frosting? Soy of some sort? I am quite ready to give up and never eat this again, despite the fact that I really like it, but I need to know which part is the problem, so I can make other plans the next time we have a birthday around here.

I have developed so many food chemical in tolerances and food allergies over the years I wouldn't dare eat a cake from Costco. It would surely contain corn products which I am allergic to, then there is Maltodextrin also from corn and dextros.

Google flavor enhancers and see what you get. A food diary is how I was able to sort things out. Write down what you eat so if you have a problem a few hours later or the next day you can go back and see what caused it. It takes a while but you will figure it out eventually.

Most likely you bought a cake with sugar-free ingredients. Some people are very sensitive to maltitol and lactitol. It won’t hurt you, but it causes the symptoms you describe.

Sorry you are having heart burn.

Really, some cakes are super easy to make; frosting, too. Follow the recipe for frosting on the chocolate chip bag and look up “hobo cake recipe” on google for a great, easy choc. cake. You mix the ingredients in the 9x12 pan you bake it in. No sifting of regular flour/dry ingredients. Just put everything in there and mix it up with a fork. We add peanut butter to the frosting. Yum.

God only knows what ingredients are in mass produced factory food these days. Give your body a break! Make a hobo cake and see if your body reacts in the same way. If you have a bad reaction to home made cake and frosting, it might be sugar.

It has been theorized that women don’t fart because they don’t keep their mouths closed long enough to build up pressure. I am not advocating that position, I am just reporting some theories I have heard voiced.

It is also fun to bake your own cake. And the delicious smell of a cake in the oven is wonderful.

You can go to a doctor and have allergy testing.

And everyone who eats it, thinks you are wonderful for making a cake from “scratch.” Big whoop!

Sara, I googled the recipe for hobo cake, but could not find a chocolate one. Everything I found was more of a fruit cake...either with raisins or more of a cherry pineapple cake. I even googled chocolate hobo cake. Do you mind sharing your recipe? Thanks!!

I would guess the soy. I’ve had issues with soy that are about the same. It now makes me pretty uncomfortable. Cannot have soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, not even non-dairy creamer, no energy bars, etc.

You really have to read the labels because almost EVERYTHING has soy in it of some sort, especially a food that is claimed to be low calorie/fat.

My condolences. Costco cakes are awesome, huge, and cheap!

(as anything from Costco should be)

I feel your pain! I can’t eat any cake, cookie, or baked good that isn’t baked by my own hands. It’s not much fun! Canola kills me and too much baking powder also bothers me. They have started replacing everything with Canola which really annoys the heck out of me. Even french fries now are being made with it. I guess they feel it’s healthier for you, but what about those of us that can’t handle it. UGH!

Best of luck!

Here you go:

Hobo Cake

Preheat oven to 350

Get out a 9/13 baking pan. Mix the ingredients in there in this order:

2 cups sugar
3 cups flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
2/3 cup cocoa
2/3 cup veg. oil
2 cups water
2 tbls. vinegar
2 tsp vanilla

This is the hardest part. LOL Mix up with a fork pushing batter on the ends into the middle so it's all mixed up good. (the vinegar will make a volcano with the baking soda so if you have children...big thing!) When all mixed bake clean the slopped up batter from the lip of pan (it will burn) and bake for 25 minutes. When toothpick is dry after you stick it in the middle, it's done.

Easier than pie!

Make frosting as directed on semisweet choc. package or look it up on the net.

The unsweetened powdered cocoa (hersheys) you use in this recipe has a frosting recipe that is great. Add two heaping tbls of peanut butter to it, if you like. Store the cake in refrigerator if you want the frosting to be like choc. peanut butter fudge.

Add a teaspoon of almond extract to that and it'll bump it up a notch.

Or if you like a hint of coffee, add a teaspoon of instant coffee crystals to it AND the almond extract. The coffee intensifies the chocolate.
