6 Unconventional Uses for your Dishwasher [MUST READ the comments]

It takes the right mix of ingenuity and desperation to discover new uses for old tools, but whoever first tried steaming a salmon fillet in their dishwasher must’ve been drunk. For folks who are curious about what else their kitchen contraptions can do, here’s a rundown of the most unconventional uses for your home dishwasher.

Steam Fish Fillets

The best part about steaming fish in your dishwasher—other than novelty of steaming fish in your dishwasher—is how simple it is. All you need to do is season a cut of your favorite fish, wrap it (tightly!) in aluminum foil, place it in the top rack, and allow it to run through an entire normal cycle. There’s no single recipe that works best; just make sure you wrap it tight enough to keep water out. Also, don’t forget to engage the dry cycle, and for the love of fish don’t load the detergent! If you’re feeling extra adventurous, check out these recipes for dishwasher lasagna and dishwasher potatoes. There’s a whole culture of dishwasher chefs with too much time on their hands!

Wash Baseball Caps

Baseball caps can fade and become misshapen in traditional washing machines. So instead of washing them that way, try loading them in the top rack of your dishwasher and running it on a full cycle. Of course, you don’t want to run the machine with dirty dishes in it; this will just spray food all over your precious Diamondbacks hat.

For fledgling roller derby enthusiasts, you can also clean knee pads, shin guards, and other sports equipment in your dishwasher. But we don’t recommend putting your jock strap in there. That’s just gross.

When I used to play with 2 stroke motorcycles I would rotate the fouled spark plugs out and put them in my mom’s self cleaning oven.

Red Green mixed and baked a tub-shaped loaf of bread in a clothes washer. Then he used a chain saw to cut it.

If it has a motor and a spinning shaft, anything is possible.

Oh by the way you can use regular vinegar in the rinse aid dispenser. It works great.

Regular vinegar in rinse dispenser is a great idea, thanks. I use a coffee cup filled with 1/2 white vinegar and 1/2 water, but rinse dispenser is so much easier.

Yachtsmen have been cooking on small diesels for ages. Some of the techniques were taught me by none other than FR's own Kenny Bunk, who is reputed to have keelholed a man for letting a souffle stick to an exhaust elbow.

To be sure, a tomato, shallot and carrot stew prepared with the meat of a Kastelorizo goat tastes just right - and flakes right off the bone - after eight hours on a Volvo D240.

Not so hilarious when you contemplate how many people are out there who are becoming increasingly unhinged.

November will NOT be pretty.

You mean, just put white vinegar in the “Jet Dry” spot? Doesn’t it make everything smell like vinegar?

Another article on the site was about using Koolaid powder as a cleaning agent. How many Navy guys here have used “bug juice” powder to as a cleaner?

We use the dishwasher to store clean dishes for days on end. It’s just one way we demonstrate “it’s not my turn” around here, apparently.

I recently started adding white vinegar because stuff was coming out so spotted. There is no odor. I put a Rubbermaid juice box with it next to the detergent since I buy white vinegar by the gallon. I use white vinegar for a lot of my cleaning. I’ve saved so much money since I discovered cleaning with vinegar.

By the way, I saw Alton Brown many, many years ago cook salmon in a dishwasher on his show.
