New Flu Shot Guards Against Newest Strains

Last year's flu shot won't shield you this year: Two new strains of influenza have begun circling the globe, and the updated vaccine appears to work well against them, government officials said Thursday.

[snip]

Influenza strains constantly evolve, and some cause more illness than others.

"...strains from the H3N2 family tend to be harsher than some other flu types, and a new H3N2 strain is included in this year's vaccine because it is circulating in parts of the world.

Only one ingredient in this year's flu vaccine was retained from last year's, protection against the H1N1 strain that caused the 2009 swine flu pandemic and has been the main kind of influenza circulating since. Also new in this year's shot is protection against a different Type B strain.

“Have a nice day...”

But in a world with flu vaccines, can any day really be seen as “nice”?

...flu vaccines are actually for preventing the flu...

That's NOT a guarantee, of course. I've NEVER had the flu...why would I need a shot? You want one? Good for you. Your choice.

An employer has the right to set the conditions for employment. In this case, a hospital, it is particularly relevant to the work environment.

You are correct...people should be told that going in, though (like with the military)...hospitals are changing the terms mid-stream with these mandates. "Don't want the shot? You're fired."

exactly.

just to tortue myself sometimes, i think about how easy my life was when *I* was a kid in the late 60's - early 70's and compare it to how regulated kids today are.

just in one generation.

then I reach for the White Zinfandel.

“you are correct. an employer has the right to set the conditions for employment. everything starts somewhere.”

This is true, and you are right to be concerned. Some employers, through the use of “operating hours” even control when people wake up, and go to bed.

Yet people blindly follow along.

” “Don’t want the shot? You’re fired.””

This makes particular sense when people in hospitals are like to come in contact, and should they become infected, are likely to spread the flu.

This is good health facility operating policy and probably falls short of the conspiracy that you imply.

If you cannot count on your employees to be functional during a flu outbreak, because they won’t get a vaccine that will prevent the flu, they aren’t really as useful to you as an employee who will get the vaccine.

If you object to this sort of thing, then you have the option of quitting to reject this sort of ‘oppression’.

Whether you quit or are fired, it’s probably good to separate those who would attempt to control you and those who refuse to be controlled, don’t you think?

Real option in this economy...

“That’s NOT a guarantee, of course. I’ve NEVER had the flu...why would I need a shot? You want one? Good for you. Your choice.”

Why would you need a shot? If your employer wishes to make it a condition for your continued employment, that’s one possible reason. There may be others, like, not wanting to get the flu.

The point is, of course, nobody is forced to get the flu shot. Some people think that an employer setting a condition for employment such as this is them being “forced” to do something. In actuality it’s people who, for whatever reason they pick, want to force employers to continue to employ them regardless of the lawful requirements of the employer.

Absolutely...with this information at hand; I would NEVER work at a hospital. Besides; that's where all the sick people are...

My understanding is that hospitals ARE giving exemptions to people on ‘religious grounds’...people that believe in that ‘mark of the beast’ stuff, I guess...what if THOSE people catch the flu? Guess that’s one for the lawyers...

hmmm...putting what time I set my alarm clock to injecting chemicals into my body on the same playing field. kind went off the rails there, pal.

look...get your flu shot. get 3 of them. not my business. it is your choice. heck, if you couldn't get to the doctor to get them, i would drive you! i completely support your decision and would help you follow thru on that decision.

i choose not to do it yet can see the day, potentially, where i will mandated to do so. it's that lack of freedom that i feel disappearing, that's all.

When I was in the military, I had to sign forms when I refused it, but refuse I did. Everyone in my section was deathly sick except me, it actually sucked. We were on deployment to Bosnia and I was the only one who could do any work.

DUH.

it's that lack of freedom that i feel disappearing

obviously i couldn't choose at the moment between "lack of freedom" and "freedom disappearing"

:P

sorry...i'm SUPPOSED to be getting ready for work. you know, that thing I set my alarm clock for a while ago. I wonder if my boss will appreciate my excuse that I was late because I was on a website defending his right to set the conditions at the workplace (wink, wink).

sorry for the mixup. :)

Sorry, I just don't want to take the flu shot. I rarely get the flu anyway, and avoiding the shot's side effects are worth the risk.

But, at work, you'd think I'd turned down life itself. The gasps in the meeting room when I said I wasn't going to take the shot. And when I said, "Since all of you will, and most people do, the population will probably achieve herd immunity, which will stop a major outbreak," my boss laughed at me, followed by the whole room.

Clueless people do not even understand how disease works, much less what they have letting the government pump into their bodies.
