A recent Egyptian TV program showed how Islamic Sharia laws many prescriptions do not merely clash with modern-day concepts like free speech and religious freedom, but even with medicine and science.
On September 16, popular TV persona Wael El-Ibrashi hosted Dr. Zaghlul al-Naggar, a prominent Islamic thinker and Chairman of Egypts Committee of Scientific Notions in the Quran, on the topic of medical science and Islam. Inevitably the idea of drinking camel urine as a form of therapyfirst proposed in the 7th century by Muslim prophet Muhammadcame up.
Not only did Dr. Naggar promote this practice, but he made the staggering announcement that right now in Egypt a medical center in Marsa Matrouh actually specializes in treating people with camel urine, all in accord with the prophets advice.
Other Egyptian thinkers joined the show via satellite, including Khaled Montaser (who earlier exposed the Islamic worlds inferiority complex). At one point, while delineating how science and medicine work, Montaser reminded that urine is where all the bodys toxins are carried out, asking so, shall we drink it for health? Naggar simply responded with arrogance: I am older than you and more learned than you: you are not going to teach me; I will teach generations of people like you.

The government of Egypt has no stored wealth, no stored money, and no ability to import basis daily needs of the population.
Smaller cities like Marsah Mutrah are in a full blown Depression since the collapse of Mubarak’s government.
The placebo effect, steeped in religiosity, is the best available medicine to a population that is living off of less than US$1/day in disposable income.
Keep in mind that from Egypt all the way down to South Africa, camel and bovine urine is a regular feature of daily practiced folk medicine.
Marsa Mutrah would be in famine in under 72 hours if Egypt’s federal government cut the wheat and petrol subsidies. The Government of Egypt has less than 3 months worth of foreign currency reserves to maintain a reduced subsidy on these staple goods.
Horrible horrible near future is in store for the poor people in Egypt.
I wonder how many people are doing this treatment while wishing they could use / afford Western medicine.
Spengler has focused on Egypt repeatedly. Here's his most recent column from last Friday:
Palestinians ditched; Egypt next?
Earlier:
Excellent idea. I recommend 3-4 liters a day.
Mohammed, it's been said, is the perfect man. Anyone denigrating his health rituals is a blasphemer and an infidel. Islamic rage boy gonna rage and President Obama gonna apologize.
