How our cities might explode

In response to recent articles in mainstream military journals discussing the use of the U.S. Army to quell insurrections on American soil, I offer an alternate vision of the future. Instead of a small town in the South as the flash point, picture instead a score of U.S. cities in the thrall of riots greater than those experienced in Los Angeles in 1965 (Watts), multiple cities in 1968 (MLK assassination), and Los Angeles again in 1992 (Rodney King). New Yorkers can imagine the 1977 blackout looting or the 1991 Crown Heights disturbance. In fact, the proximate spark of the next round of major riots in America could be any from a long list cribbed from our history.

We have seen them all before, and we shall see them all again as history rhymes along regardless of the century or the generation of humankind nominally in control of events. But the next time we are visited by widespread, large-scale urban riots, a dangerous new escalation may be triggered by a fresh vulnerability: It’s estimated that the average American home has less than two weeks of food on hand. In poor minority areas, it may be much less. What if a cascading economic crisis, even a temporary one, leads to millions of EBT (electronic benefit transfer) cards flashing nothing but ERROR? This could also be the result of deliberate sabotage by hackers, or other technical system failures. Alternatively, the government might pump endless digits into the cards in a hopeless attempt to outpace future hyperinflation. The government can order the supermarkets to honor the cards, and it can even set price controls, but history’s verdict is clear: If suppliers are paid only with worthless scrip or blinking digits, the food will stop.

This is where I think our right wing talkers have failed us.

If there is rioting in the cities, it doesn’t require a response in the country and I wish our radio people were differentiating the rural from the urban areas. For that matter, rioting in a city always ends with the rest of the country paying for it financially and that needs to stop.

Sorry to reference this on FR, but last month I read a work of fiction along these lines (NSFW) entitled “The Collapse” that can be found on an adult site called ‘Literotica’. The first 2/3 of the story are the relevant portion and the parallels to this story are remarkable. Remarkable for the fact that it’s not just a handful of people who are now contemplating this kind of situation.

This scenario is likeliest in cities where the Entitlement Community holds majority sway.

What the more well-fed socialist political folks don't want you to see:

Oh, yeah, some of the poorest folks riot in some city from time to time. But they're accustomed to "austerity." Watch, instead, for the cream of the political constituent crop from both parties perpetrating the mother of all riots.

See Greece and other countries that are recently repudiating debt ("haircuts:" the sneakier form of repudiation).

Bonds will collapse. Skyrocketing interest rates will follow, and a collapse of business and government activity after that. Pensioners will take "haircuts." Planners, teachers, police, building inspectors will be unemployed or have their incomes severely cut! NGOs will close! Business, lacking its usual government-funded customers, will shut down. The vicious cycle will repeat again and again. Most of the middle class and much of the upper is now supported by funding from government.

Most of those who now receive larger incomes and benefits from government will be the most noticeable rioters of the near future. Many, having already lost their jobs, are part of the new crime demographic (cattle rustlers with fancy rigs, apparent former middle class bank robbers in ski resorts, the new wave of officious robberies backed only by outrageous regulations and false allegations, all).

Sowell was fearful of a white backlash, was he not? In essence, he pointed out that the media is trying to put a lid on racist attacks on whites for fear of such a backlash, but that won’t stop it.

FYI, a huge portion of the black population that once existed in S. CA, left LA en mass over the past 20 year or so, headed to places east and south bound, like Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, east coast and north east. They were replaced by Hispanics, many of which are hard working folks.

The days of large riots driven predominantly by black folks, over things like court trials, won't be repeated in the LA region.

Much of the black population took the midnight train to Georgia, Texas and other points east and south.

That is one of the points east where they left too. BTW, Victorville is a relatively small town, far from LA, out in the desert. Many left to the inland empire of s. CA, but most kept going east, south, etc.
