There are all kinds of places to get survival items such as Goodwill Industries, Deseret Industries, thrift shops, estate sales, yard sales, garage sales, fundraisers, pawn shops, flea markets, moving sales and Internet sites such as Craigslist, Half.com, eBay and Amazon.
Every Saturday during the good-weather months, I sneak off in the mornings to see what I can find at the local yard sales. I am always on the lookout for things like camping equipment, sleeping bags, wool blankets, backpacks and medical supplies.
I am also stockpiling emergency supplies, canning supplies, medical supplies, lighting, garden tools, hand tools, fishing equipment, warm winter clothing, bedding, fuel, guns and ammo. Whenever I find a bargain, I add it to my stockpile.
You can find myriad useful survival items at garage sales and thrift stores. I love garage sales, and I always find good stuff — like the time I found a Vitamix for $25 and a Champion Juicer for $50. My last great find was 10 oil lamps still in the package for $3 each; I bought them all.

Most mid and large size “swiss army” knives have a P-38 type can opener as do Leatherman tools.
Only thing I worry about is the annual shakedown by the local criminals local taxes.
Having fed tens of thousands of meals in the field, I'm good with camping equipment.

Roving bands won't last for very long. Americans will form local militias very quickly. Roving bands can only last if they are supported by a government. Local militias will quickly establish communications with state governments. If they have to, State governments can reestablish a Federal government.
I would be much more worried about a federal coup that used existing mechanisms to subjugate local areas.
I hadn't thought about that. I once worked for a Swedish company (un-named) and they seem to hand out multi-purpose knives for every occassion. I have a box full of them, from itty bitty to large.
I never understood why a Swedish company would hand out Swiss army knives. But the glug was great at Christmas.

The wool blankets are available cheap through Sportsman’s Guide in their quarterly surplus catalog. Good stuff, very reasonably priced.
I’ve gotten wool blankets and throws from Sierra Trading Post at great prices. Here is a throw that would be $44.17 if you signed up for their Deal Flyer. Excellent quality.
I stopped at an estate sale and got two “vintage” 5-gal gas cans, very nice shape, for $24...and one of them had 4 gallons of good gas in it.
I’d be interested in reading ideas for long-term, outdoor (just in case), gun/ammo storage.
I’m seeing less and less great deals and prep items are getting scarce at garage sales. Me thinks the sheeple are are waking up.
The Sportsman’s Guide blankets are EU mil surplus and very inexpensive, like twelve for fifty-four bucks, IIRC . [item #H2M-62845 90 x 64 size, new never used]

Lots of folks use the term 'survivalist' as a pejorative. To those that sneer, I have to ask what the opposite of a survivor is?
well, that is a huge price difference. Maybe Sierra Trading Post wool throws are better for Christmas gifts for mom’s in cold weather states

The opposite of survivor is : VICTIM !
Survivor = pro-active
Victim = passive, submissive
The more commentary we see from the “BOB”/”WROL” (”bug-out bag”/”without rule of law”) city folks, the less welcome they become outside of their cities.
And camping gear is useless.
Nah, not useless. What is useless is negative nellies that just want to run down people that are doing something to prepare for their local disasters.
