Total consumption of beer in the U.S. has fallen for the third straight year, according to a report published by the Beer Institute, a beer lobbying group. Since 2008, total beer consumption has fallen by as much as 11% in some states. Americans still, however, consume a massive amount of the foamy beverage — an estimated 6.3 billion gallons in 2011. Nationwide, 28.3 gallons of beer a year were consumed for every American of legal age.

Considering that Old Joe was the one who scammed the FDR administration in the Scotch tariff, all is golden...

I hope the numbers are based on per capita consumption, as Delaware is a rather small state.

Ted was a Chivas Regal drinker. One observation about New Hampshire is probably true, a very large fraction of the beer purchased in New Hampshire is consumed in the state bordering it to the south.

It was a fun trip. Usually a group of us...hungover as well. If we partied in Wilmington, we’d hit PA. Party in Newark, we’d hit MD. Good memories.

Number 4? We need to try harder. Seriously, though, it’s hard to believe anyone is above Wisconsin.

When I logged on to FR I looked at the “Latest posts” page and saw in this order: (This thread) “States that drink the most beer” immediately followed by one titled “Let the leaks begin” ( http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2944081/posts )

I have been watching the movie you posted. That guy has tossed down 16 of those so far and STILL hasn’t fallen off his chair!

I’m impressed!

Which also explains why Vermont is #7. New Hampshire has two advantages: (1)No sales tax, (2)Closer to the bigger cities in Massachusetts.

Well. don't forget there is no sales tax in Delaware. And it is next to NJ, PA, MD, and VA. Beer is not the only thing out-of-state folks buy in DE. Why do you think there is no sales tax here?

Sheesh, ‘creek. I’m doing my part. I’m going into my 46th season of beer drinking and I don’t think I’ve barfed beer in 26 years.

I just finished a Labatts Blue (I’m usually enjoying an IPA). Times are tight.

GO Michigan!

Actually, after I posted my comment, I though about that. It should have come to me sooner, as I live in MD, and we drive to DE to make home improvement purchases.

It is a bit out of the way for us, so driving there for a case of beer is not practical, but, if we are in Delaware for some big-ticket purchases, we swing by the liquor store if there’s room in the SUV.

PS: Here in the Peoples Republic of Maryland, the sales tax is 6%, while the tax on alcohol is 9%!

I was born & raised in NY State, and transferred here under the Big Blue Oval. I hated to have to figure anything other than necessities needed an extra 10% to buy anything when I left there 28 years ago. Here, what you see is what you pay. That used to be a great relief, but now I’ve become accustomed to it, it would be hard to move to another state now that my income is mainly SS and it doesn’t cover my essentials. Drinking & smoking is not, for a long time. Last beer, 1985; last smoke 1990; last steady job, 1992; first SS check, 1999.
