WASHINGTON (CBS DC) Verizon has filed a patent for targeting ads that collect information from infrared cameras and microphones that can detect the amount of people and types of conversations happening in customers living rooms.
The set-top box technology is not the first of its kind Comcast patented similar monitoring technology in 2008 that recommended content to users based on people it recognized in the room. Google TV also proposed a patent that would use video and audio recorders to figure out exactly how many people in a room were watching its broadcast.
Verizon filed for the application in May 2011, but the report was published last week due to laws stating that all patent applications be published after 18 months.
FierceCable first publicized the Verizon patent that gives examples of the DVRs acute sensitivity in customers living rooms: argument sounds prompt ads for marriage counseling, and sounds of cuddling prompt ads for contraceptives.

They don’t even try to hide it anymore. And remember, all the computer GEOs are tight with obama.
It may also detect Tourette’s Syndrome, like every time I see Mr. Soetoro on the screen I shout expletives. This would allow me to be enrolled and round up up for re-education camp assignment. Sounds about right.
Da Comrade!
Behind Winston's back the voice from the telescreen was still babbling away about pig-iron and the overfulfilment of the Ninth Three-Year Plan. The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it, moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard. There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to. You had to live -- did live, from habit that became instinct -- in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized.George Orwell - 1984
except darkness won’t be a limiting factor anymore.
>> Kinda scary
Only if you watch teevee. If you don’t it’s a non-problem.
Whats scary is the extent they’ll go to monitor you. You obviously use a computer. They can tell its you by the sites you visit and what you type. Thats assuming your PC doesnt have a camera they can turn on.

Well, yeah — or, instead of spying on me, they could just *ask* me what I think. I’m fairly open about my ideology. In fact I have liberal friends that I’m sure wish I’d just shut the hell up already.
What should I be worried about? I refuse to live in a cave or lie awake nights. Life’s too short.
They don’t want to ask you. They don’t want you knowing what they know about you.
connect that to Skynet
BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING
This would be a good time for the competition to win over a lot of Verizon customers with:
We don’t spy on you.
And we still give you the same channels.
For the same price or less.
Maybe in the course of spying on me, “they”’ll follow me to church.
It might be good for “them”. The LORD works in mysterious ways.
I fear that an unscrupulous employee may detect certain patterns in homes that are monitored, such as when you are at church. He then might decide to visit your home during one of these times while you are routinely away.
I used to work for a PBX monitoring group. We could tell what time of day it was by what notifications we got from certain customers. It doesn’t take long for humans to identify patterns. Even less if you program a computer to watch for patterns for you (which we could ... and did).
So does Satan
