Norton Blocking FR? - Vanity

If you use a router, reset it via the reset button -- then change your password.
I went through two full days of virus and malware hunting, always coming up clean.
Finally dawned on me it was the router (I had done a reset months earlier, but forgot to change the default pw).

yup . I confess to knowing nothing about such things . my son’s are my IT guys and they set it up.for me .

but security essentials are what I use .

So while I was poking around in there, I had a look at my logs.

FR’s IP address is flagged as “incoming request blocked” about a million times.

WTH?

Saving/exporting/reformatting/reinstalling everything takes me *days* and I’m not in the mood for that right now.

I started using imagining for major backups several years ago. On my XPs I used a program called CloneGenius (now a part of spotmau.com).

My newer Win7 laptops and desktop have manufacturer imaging programs included.

I image after any major upgrades. I also keep my data on a separate partition. Imaging the OS partition/drive usually takes about 45 minutes. If you need to 'reinstall' the OS, it is easier to apply the imaging restore, because it contains all your settings and installed software.

Imaging has saved me many times. I do occasionally use System Restore, if I see a problem do to recent new or upgraded software. But for major restoring, I use the most recently created 'image' file. Applying an image restore usually takes about 45 minutes, depending on the number of installed programs, etc.

I will never put Norton’s on any computer again.

I stopped using Norton back at Win98. It created too many hardware and software conflicts.

I later tried McAfee. NEVER again -- even though my ISP offers it for free. I tried it once; it got to be bloatware. I also tested their firewall, which I didn't like and uninstalled (I thought). After I dumped everything McAfee, I would get popups about every 3 months asking me to retry McAfee. I couldn't get rid of the popups, until I had a major crash and had to reinstall everything.

AVG was good for a while, but it, too, became bloatware. I dumped it for AVAST!, but the newer version conflicted with some of my other programs. I dropped AVAST! and went with MS Security Essentials. MSSE seems to work without any conflicts.

The first PC I ever got back in the 90’s had his garbage installed from the factory.

I reformatted that thing *3* times before I figured out that McAfee was killing it every time I turned it on.

McAfee is still factory installed on some systems.

When I’ve found it, before I did anything else, I reinstalled the whole OS *minus* McCrap and the other company propietary garbage.

The only company I’ve found that runs great off the factory version of the OS is Alienware.

Problem is that the image contains all the screwed up DLLs and such.

I do a full format of the HDD, strip it clean and take it down to the bare metal.

I’m kinda radical, that way.

Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite used to be my thing.

And then they went berserk.

Haven’t used them in 4 years...or more.

MalwareBytes is really good for most things.

AVG Free grabs most of the stuff that MWB misses.

Polite suggestion: switch to Opera v12.11 Set-up ‘Speed Dial’ page for your favorite sites, and it’s a real slick browser.

I haven’t used IE in 5-6yrs, and it’s a real pleasure to have it off the Taskbar (r/c; unpin). I also use FireFox v16, too, as a back-up when FR turns to molasses.

My first suggestion is to do a wholesale “DELETE” on anything on your computer that contains “....norton.....”....

Agreed. Nortons is over with. Went to McAfees, but it got too bloated. Now run Kaspersky’s on everything, and it runs flawlessly. Also use MSE and Defender. Never had virus or security issues, but has blocked many potential sites and data.
