I was going to avoid it because I saw too many mental Hobbits (no offense to Hobbits) on election day. I was wondering if it was any good.
Next week I will see "Jack Reacher" and post a review.
I will go to a theatre to watch it...and will ultimately add it to my LOTR video collection.
Like you said, good escapist stuff from some of the uglier aspects of reality. I am disappointed to hear that it will be released in three parts, though.
I guess we can expect The Silmarillion eventually..
That sounds like a lovely way to spend Christmas Eve with your children. We have all of the LOTR on DVD, and watch it often.
The Reacher books are great, Tom Cruise.....meh......
Good grief, can you imagine how many movies it would take to do the Silmarillion?
Take a look at the link at post 23. :)
I’ll wait for a pirated copy, if I watch it at all. I’m a bit picky about keeping my dollars from crossing enemy lines.
Agree, except that the literary Jack Reacher may rip your liver out with his little fingeer for calling him a Marine. His father was a Marine; Jack Reacher was a soldier. West Point. U.S. Army.
Just came from seeing it with hubby. We both thought it STUNK. Could not wait for it to be over. We do like the original trilogy, although I am not too fond of part 2, call it the bad teeth movie, too many. We were pretty disappointed because we heard good things about it.
I wouldn’t go see the Hobbit, just so I can watch a trailer, but it’s certainly a bonus.
That Reacher flick looks pretty violent.
You sure you wanna risk walking out of the theater and going on a shooting spree?

I’m sure it could be done, because I don’t think the Silmarillion would be successful, at the box office.
It’s too high-minded and unrelateable. However, if they did make it, I’d go see it.
I saw it this afternoon with four of my children (12, 10, 8, 6) and a gaggle of other children from the homeschool association, plus parents. It had lots of walking, hiking, trekking, and fleeing in it, as well as scenic views of prominent tourism-ad scenes of New Zealand. And some snappy dialogue, vigorous fight scenes, lot of falling, and a truly cool giant white Warg. And a surprising star turn for rabbits.
We were all on our best behavior. Only my 8-year-old, who isn’t the sharpest knife in the chandelier, said, “That wasn’t in the book!” a little too loudly.
All things considered, I had a good time. It’s quite a long movie. The boys ate some pretzels, and I had an apple and a spinach and onion sandwich.
Hubby and I liked it. It was very intense at times and the three hours flew by. The 3D was neat and I wasn’t distracted by the HFR. Didn’t really notice it. The special effects were stunning and the music is good - themes from the LOTR.
I’m a huge fan of Martin Freeman who also plays Dr. Watson in the new Sherlock. He is beyond cute and has great facial expressions.
I really liked Thorin too.
I’d give in 4 stars as compared to 5 stars for LOTR. Escapism at its best and very welcome after a very bad news day yesterday,
Wouldn’t recommend it for Christmas Eve viewing (too intense in a bad way) or for children under 10-11 years of age. Way too violent and scary.
We saw the Hobbit this AM in 24 FPS, NO 3D on purpose. It was good (3 1/2 stars), but not really great compared to LOTR(5 stars). Boy I don’t know if Jackson can stretch two more movies out of Tolkein’s 1937 childrens story???
Peter Jackson is drawing upon other Tolkien works. We’re getting more than just the Hobbit.
I’d read any movie review you wrote.
Going monday. I’m expecting it to drag (there is simply not 3 movies in that book), but I’m nerdy enough to like it anyway.
Thank you. I figured the premise of the thread was, “Tell me something that will help me decide if I want to see the movie, without telling me everything so that I decide it would be a waste of time to see it.”
I thought the amount of time devoted to falling was excessive, but that’s just a personal taste. New Zealand is quite hilly, after all, so falling is appropriate to the landscape. Also, I’m sure I got drunk with some of the dwarves in my wasted youth in Texas. They have long lifespans.
“Bilbo and Frodo havent aged a day surprisingly.”
It’s a prequel. Why would they have aged?
