The Kim Komando Show ^ | January 13, 2013 | Kim Komando

Facebook is a fabulous way to connect with friends and family. Of course, Facebook is also a spectacular way to embarrass yourself. And it happens almost every day.

Users post personal photos and intimate status updates that they think only a few friends will see. Then the posts get broadcast to friends of friends or - worse - everyone.

I confess that I am on facebook, but only because my newphew and neice in the holy land asked me to do so. Evil Mark Zuckerman (and I think he is a jerk) had something useful in his facebook stuff because facebook told me about the wife of my nephew's birthday and I then called her up to wish her a happy birthday.

It is indictative however of the sheer intellectual degeneration of our society that it is Facebook that is so popular and eclipses such important websites such as Free Republic and Atlas Shrugs.

Maybe given the intellectual and moral degeneration of our society, maybe the Kardashian sluts can start a social website and it will beat out even Zuckerman.

No reason to be ashamed of being on Facebook. I’ve been on for years and it’s a great social device and business tool. It’s not for curmudgeons...who would want them there anyway?

I use Facebook to keep up with old high school friends, since we’ve all scattered around so much. I think I have 15 ‘Friends’, and not much happens.

People do brag - showing off new cars, home renovations, vacation photos, etc.

But heck, that’s what people do when they’re face to face.

I actually listen alot more than I talk, I have probably posted less than a half dozen times. But, I can see the advantage of using it to share photos of kids growing up, etc.

But...everything can be abused. Those that post status updates every 15 minutes and search out things to like....those are the ones who are building a robost marketing ‘profile’, for Facebook to sell.

If everybody used Facebook like I do, it would be some shareware site by now. Its the frenetic posting addiction some have that have given it (imaginary) value, and made it a gold mine for data. I don’t view Facebook as ‘evil’. Its run by people I don’t like, as with so many other products I use every day. We just seem to have collectively eaten some stupid soup as a society, and taken it way, way too far.

I limit my “social networking” to LinkedIn. My use of it is strictly as a professional network. As for Facebook, I would not even think of it, especially after living in a part of the country where adults still have the social mentality of junior high children (a state in the upper midwest).
There is however a trend where some companies will not hire a candidate without a Facebook profile. The claim is that the person has “something to hide”. Sorry, there are no salacious photos of me partaking in the “I wanna party-party-party and get drunk-drunk-drunk” pop culture. Besides, much of my “personal life” is quite ordinary, and I treat it as a “need to know” subject. And some of my professional background is “need to know” as well.

“...some companies will not hire a candidate without a Facebook profile...”

O.M.G.

I had a very nice Family Farm business for 21yrs, before closing down and “retiring” 11/1/11, and am glad I didn’t get into that arena of idiocy and filth.

I deactivated my Facebook account on 11/6/12 as soon as Ohio went to Obama.

Good move.

I remember at 11:54pm on 11/6/12, when Fox News announced that Ohio’s 18 EC Votes went to 0scumbag, and declared him the winner. I crawled out on “the ledge”. heh.

For those who haven’t heard, there is a HUGE conservative upsurge movement underway right now, especially on Twitter.

Information is how you use it, irrespective of its source.

Sarah Palin ain’t been posting here on FR, in case anyone has noticed, a reminder of social media’s role in getting the conservative message out.

On a technical note, search for the following plugins for your browser: FB Pority and DoNotTrackMe, both are very useful in protecting privacy.

Some people like to be out in the open, fighting the good fight, others like to stay out of the limelight and value their privacy.

I can respect both, so do as one sees fit. Enjoy!

You sure you don’t have Facebook confused with the twit site “Twitter?’

Yes, it is a symptom of the time. I can’t imagine this having been conceived any time prior to the 80s.

I have a fake FB account (fake name; false information other than general geographical area) and Facebook knows it is fake, but they let me keep it because I helped them with a sting operation (collecting information on a guy attempting dictionary password attacks).

In general it is useful having a FB account to get read access to other accounts that require you to be logged in to FB (such as a U.S.F.S. news account I visit). I don't post anything.
