The concept of the nation moving to a Nebraska-Maine electoral system has been brought up here several times. This spurred the question of "well, would it hurt or help us if applied on a national level?" Well, I recently stumbled across a map on another forum, and we have an answer. Somebody did the research, and made a map based on the results. States are colored by whoever won the two statewide electors.
The results? Democrats, 270 Electoral Votes, Republicans, 268. Now, obviously, if such a method had been used in real life, the campaigns would have changed strategies, gone after individual districts in "enemy territory". Some districts that went Democrat or Republican historically would go the other way. But still, this is useful to get a general idea of where things would stand with the Congressional District method.
The best argument for adopting the district system is that voter fraud is confined to the district where it occurs plus possibly the two at large state electors, not entire states with large blocks of electoral votes.

With this system, Every state can send electors towards an eventual winner, and forces them to spread out spending.
As it is now, the candidates need no spending in California or Texas, because the electoral outcome is already decided.
I’ll venture that in numbers California has just as many, if not more conservative voters than Texas.

That’s because this map is based off of the historic 2012 results by congressional district and no New England CDs went for Romney.
Remember how the establishment pimping Willard (and McCain before him) said that he’d help the GOP win New England ! Not a single CD went for him. What a joke.
OTOH, big Democrat strongholds such as California (10), New York (7) and Illinois (2) are skewed toward the Democrats by a counterbalancing amount.
The progressive left is always whining about us being more like Europe. Most of Europe essentially choose their national leaders based on the results of what would be equivalent to our congressional districts.
