TCM Classic Movie Alert 2/26/13
TCM ^ | 2/26/13 | Vision

This is your Turner Classic Movie channel alert!

Film fans, do not miss tonight's movie. A masculine story of a proud, American industrialist. There are some amazing quotes in this film. One in particular is where the main character chastises his wife for claiming European countries are more advanced- by stating that clean schools and borders free from soldiers are more important. And there are others. It's probably my favorite film of all time and gives a rare glimpse into the once great culture of America. Walter Huston is amazing as is the entire cast. Thinking of this film gets me a little emotional. Enjoy.

Tonight...Dodsworth(1936)), 8pm est

"A husband whose wife left him looks for new love in Europe."

Glad you liked it. It's so well made. Every time I see it a new piece of dialog or a scene just makes me marvel at how well it's made. It's a perfect movie.

A Mortal Storm is another of my favorites...

Both of my parents were WWII vets... this film really strikes a chord with me.
Both my parents too, plus my FIL.
But I never saw the movie until the 1970s - years after I came back from Vietnam - and I marveled at how much of it was still relevant.

Don’t think that is the entire movie. Anyway, I recommend you rent it and watch it in one sitting...it’s that good.

Thanks so much for the ping Nutmeg. I am at my brothers in OKC for winter & not sure he has Turner. I was at small group from church last night & didn't check anything much on computer when I got home. Dodsworth sounded like a great movie

I am pinging the list that I had used the past couple years to share a movie site & just to say hi. Still LOVE movies & go to theater at least once a week and often twice. Movies on disc are frequent. I know a lot are no longer at FR but Will post the ping list here for you or anyone else to feel free to use.

I am going to post this thread link at the new Facebook Cinema Group (Cinema: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly)

This is a rather small group at this point. You can feel free to add your friends. It is a private group, which means people can see the group name & members but cannot see the wall or any of your posts. When members are added, I must approve. Some might slip by but if they turn out to be distractors, they will be promptly removed. We wont have the control freaks there we experience here at the movie threads.

If you are a member of Facebook and want to join cinema discussion free from attacks from people who never go to the movie but want to tell you what to do, then join us. I just started it yesterday & Many of the members I added are movie going Freepers .. and even a few of the banned ones, like Altura, who is a movie fan.

I know some have hesitations with Facebook. I have been a member for MANY years and found no issues by using common sense. I have my settings at private. No one can see "my stuff" unless they are my friend. I do NOT do the games or APS on the site (like birthday reminder, Farmville etc); I do NOT add people I don't know or don't have anything in common with. I have added many folks who share my photography, cinema, animal, natural healing ideas. Not had a bad experience once. Don't open questionable links. That is common sense for here, Email as well as FB. I do most of my political posting at the political groups. FR has a group that is fairly busy & there is another rogue group that is good also. You can use your main wall for other things.

Just wanted to give this little speel now rather than wait for those who ask. I know it is NOT for everyone and with time limitations we must make choices where to spend the precious minutes each day on line

I am just interested in having a place to discuss movies w/o harassment. --

Here is the Ping list

They have the entire movie, that’s just “A”, part one. After you watch it look underneath in the Recommendeds and you’ll see “B”, click on it to continue, and so forth.

Thank you for this tip. I really enjoyed it — fast paced and great dialog, stars, etc.

Recently I was reading a book on Choosing Your People. A book about how to pick the people to hang out with more or less. In the book it said to look at what “turns a certain person on” and that is how to judge a potential pal.

The scene where Dodsworth is planning his trip to Siberia and trying a Moscow to Seattle airline was a perfect example of a man turned on by ideas. A man creating and planning for the future is someone I want to hang out with.

I may not have watched it had it not been for your tip.

If you are in OKC maybe you can sneak down to the POTEET THEATRE and see the wall paintings my niece and I did for THE SOUND OF MUSIC. They will be covered over after the last performance.

I will post them after the play begins it’s run, when my niece sends me her photos.

When Harold Russell was old and in ill health on Cape Cod he sold one of his Oscars to raise some money. His benefactor let him, (nay insisted) that he keep it until he died. No telling where it is now.

That is wonderful that Russell's benefactor insisted that he keep his Oscar until he died... I didn't know that.

Here's a quote via imdb.com from Harold Russell regarding the sale of his Best Actor in a Supporting Role Oscar to pay for his wife's medical expenses:

[on the sale of his Supporting Actor Oscar for his wife's surgery] "I don't know why anybody would be critical. My wife's health is much more important than sentimental reasons. The movie will be here, even if Oscar isn't."

Both my parents too, plus my FIL.

Oh dear, I should have mentioned my FIL as well (actually step-father-in-law). He was in an Army supply unit that followed the D-Day invasions in France. My father saw a lot of action as an Army Sargeant in the Pacific Theater... Mom was was a Navy WAVE.

But I never saw the movie until the 1970s - years after I came back from Vietnam - and I marveled at how much of it was still relevant.

Thank YOU for your service! I didn't see "Best Years" until just a few years ago. Luckily I was able to see this movie - and discuss it - with my Mom just before she passed...

One of the greatest moments in movies history is when Homer rips the flag off that lapel. (And the moments that follow, oh yeah!)

Hands down, that is my favorite moment in the movie! (The Best Years of Our Lives)

I so wish Hollywood was patriotic and pro-America these days, like they used to be decades ago...

for my list, I just added the names of those who participated here to the ping list. I dont ping much here anymore however that is why I posted names so anyone who does could get the names.

Funny thing, when I did yours & typed I got the message NO ONE by that name .. or some such message.

It is only on careful examination that I realized for YEARS I have had the wrong name for you in my head.. I had BaYb as BaRb.. biker barb.. not biker babe.. that is very clever but only if your reader is smart enough to notice!

LOL.

Oh, DollyCali, your movie pings were always so much fun. It was a bright spot amongst all the depressing news of the day. Are you sure you won’t change your mind? I don’t use Facebook, even though I am registered there. I guess I might have to change my ways. ; )
