No health effects from Fukushima: Japan researcher

TOKYO (AFP) - A Japanese government-backed researcher said Friday no health effects from radiation released by the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant have been seen in people living nearby.

The pronouncement by Kazuo Sakai of Japan's National Institute of Radiological Sciences is the latest by authorities seeking to quell fears over the long-term effects of the disaster.

But it was dismissed by campaign group Greenpeace who said the government should not seek to play down health worries.

"Since the accident in Fukushima, no health effects from radiation have been observed, although we have heard reports some people fell ill due to stress from living as evacuees and due to worries and fears about radiation," Sakai said.

"We know from epidemiological surveys among atomic-bomb victims in Hiroshima and Nagasaki that if exposure to radiation surpasses 100 millisieverts, the risk of cancer will gradually rise.

"To put it the other way round, we can't say risk of cancer will rise if you are exposed to radiation lower than 100 millisieverts," he said, adding that most people measured had radiation exposure of 20 millisieverts or less.

Sakai said radiation is not at "the level we have to worry about its health effect," for people in Fukushima, taking into account exposure from the atmosphere and ingestion from food.

i am sorry you cannot trust the japanese on anything serious.

they are compulsive “honor” liars. they think it will all go away lying about stuff.

same damn thing about their whaling activities. bunch of liars. and it’s offensive because they think we’re dumb enough to believe their blatant, bald-faced lies.

On a PBS special on the quake, geologists noted that the entire coast of Japan near the quake dropped from 3’ to 7’ as a result of the quake.

30’ walls were now 27’ above sea level, etc, and the tsunami could just tear through what defenses existed.

Of course, the a tsunami that big heads toward shore, it would just climb to whatever height it could and overwhelm sea defenses.

The researcher is sort of wrong.

Nuclear fearmongering has led to the forced relocation of thousands, increased energy costs (leading to lost opportunities), and a greater reliance on coal power (and its atmospheric releases of sulphur compounds and soot).

All of which has undoubtedly degraded the health of the Japanese.

That statement is a joke, considering that Tepco just recently acknowledged that some of the molten corium, which they still have not completely located, went down the downcomers and into the suppression chamber of at least 1 of the reactors. Virtually impossible to decommission and cleanup such a scenario in a timely fashion.

There is still no containment, they still do not know where the coriums are fully located, radiation levels are still rising in Fukushima, very young Tuna are still being found with radiation along California, over half of the female children in Fukushima have thyroid lumps, US Navy personal on the USS Reagan are suing Tepco and the Japanese government for numerous ailments and the list just goes on and on.

This guys credibility has been destroyed forever. What an absolutely Ridiculous claim. The facts say otherwise. Thyroid problems, and birth defects have already been shown to be on a major rise. People would even have to throw out all known facts about radiation to believe this lire.
