A toddler who slipped outside through a doggie door was mauled to death by her family's seven dogs in the backyard while the attack went unnoticed by child's mother and other relatives inside their home, a southeast Georgia sheriff said Thursday.

Bryan County Sheriff Clyde Smith said the child's grandmother told investigators she was lying in bed when she heard the pit bulls and pit bull mixes barking, and she looked outside her window to see them dragging the girl. Smith said she began yelling, "They're killing Monica!"

You know something about dogs, but not about Pitbulls. Many of the same type of attacks have been attributed to a single pitbull. Many other breeds of dogs, in fact, view children as a part of the pack that they will protect against threats from other dogs and people. As a licensed DVM for a few decades I have dealt with every breed, and there are several dangerous breeds out there. Trust me, I have had lots of close contact and had to forcefully restrain more than one in order to perform minor procedures.

Actually, I have handled quite a few as a licensed DVM. There are several other dangerous breeds that can also be handled by adults with the expertise.

I had a neighbor in college who had a couple of Chows (another vicious, unpredictable breed) and they also kept rabbits in hutches outside. They could never figure out why the rabbits were dying of no apparent causes, when it was from FRIGHT (heart attack) when the dogs would charge the cages. I watched this several times.

Her husband was close by and rescued her using a two by four on the dog. Oddly, they said the dog was upset because there was a bitch in heat in a nearby yard.

You are absolutely correct especially concerning dogs being around small/young children. When we were considering getting a large dog, our vet recommended staying away from these breeds: pit (or pit mix), rott, and chow. We went with a GSD and never had an issue. IMHO, different types of breeds react differently and people should choose based on their lifestyle/family.

20+ years ago, a neighbor’s loose pit bull sunk his teeth into a little kid, in front of our house. My roommate grabbed the biggest carving knife in the drawer, ran outside, and promptly sunk it in the canine’s neck. It seemed cruel, at that moment, but he probably saved the kid’s life.

It isn’t an opinion, it is a fact. Some breeds have herding instincts, others have hunting instincts, and others will retrieve anything. I once had a Border Collie, never trained a day in his life, but he knew very well how to handle livestock, or anything that needed to be herded. Disposition is part of the breed.

Absolutely, he did the right thing. That was an emergency situation. I once had to choke a Charpai with a noose to make him let loose of a female vet student’s hand. When he couldn’t breath he released his grip. It was chaos for about 30 seconds as you can imagine.

Any dogs in numbers but especially guard or fight breeds cannot be around prey acting toddlers unsupervised

I have pits to be more dog aggressive than most....my girl Johnson is too

But I think Rotts and other larger and smarter attack breeds are more dangerous

There are simply so many pit style dogs around and in poor hands

Some city girl raising one in a condo at five points is gonna have a different outcome than some jackass with one tied to a chain in the mud that he throws scraps to once a day and teases with kittens

No child should die like that but banning Pits won’t stop it

To be fair, 1) an AR-15 is not going to shoot someone without a human pulling the trigger, 2) whereas dogs can attack without a human “pulling the trigger.”

You forgot the important other ingredient, they must also buy insurance.
If they are deadbea... errr, parasites and can't afford it, one of the 300 federal welfare programs will subsidize it.

Consider this and the numerous other cases, such as the two animals who shot the one year old in the stroller.

Question: I wonder how many of these re-treads and monsters in training are the results of the LBJ "war on poverty" welfare driven dis-function machine?

Has anyone tried to tie this all together? It`d be nice to know just how many of the crimes in this country are committed by people, or their children, who are on public assistance? Even better would be adding: Just how long has the particular family line been on public assistance? Where did they start and what has been the results of all this "enforced altruism"?

It would be interesting to know just what we`ve purchased and how much it has cost in both lives and money. Hell, we already know its cost the Republic.

One of my brothers and his wife got rid of their small POODLE when it nipped someone and they had a new baby.

I did the same thing with a sheltie we had when our daughter became a toddler. She reached over a gate at the stairs to pet the dog who was on the other side and the dog snapped at her hand. I had to get rid of the dog as I knew I could no longer trust her around my toddler.

I worked 20 years in a service industry and have been in thousands of people’s backyards.

There were only two instances where I wasn’t able to bluff my way past barking, growling dogs. Both times they were Chows.

That is a question for a different thread. It could be these people were just poor and don’t listen when you attempt to reason with them about the danger of their dogs. Many veterinarians refuse to treat these dogs because of the liability.
