‘FDR and the Jews,’ by Richard Breitman and Allan J. Lichtman
NY Times ^ | April 5, 2013 | DAVID OSHINSKY

Franklin Roosevelt enjoyed the overwhelming support of American Jews during his presidency, and the reasons are clear. In his three-plus terms from 1933 to 1945, he led the war against Hitler, supported a Jewish homeland in Palestine...

Starting in the 1960s, a flood of books appeared with self-evident titles like “No Haven for the Oppressed” and “While Six Million Died.” But the most influential account by far was David S. Wyman’s “Abandonment of the Jews,” published in 1984. Wyman considered numerous parties responsible for America’s tepid response to the Holocaust, including a badly divided Jewish community, a nest of virulent anti-Semites in the State Department, and a distracted president largely indifferent to humanitarian concerns he felt were beyond his control, no matter how enormous the scope.

“FDR and the Jews,” by Richard Breitman and Allan J. Lichtman, history professors at American University, is the latest, and most thoughtful, entry into this scholarly minefield...

Early in 1945, following the Yalta conference with Churchill and Stalin, the president traveled to the Middle East, saying he’d most likely never “get over here again.” Roosevelt had always considered himself a master of persuasion, but his key meeting with the Saudi king Ibn Saud did not go well. Noting that Europe’s surviving Jews had suffered “indescribable horrors,” he assured the king that allowing them into Palestine would improve the land for Arabs as well as Jews. Ibn Saud was unmoved. Cooperation with Zionists was impossible, he replied; that door was closed. Returning to America, the exhausted president actually apologized to Rabbi Stephen Wise, a prominent Jewish leader, for failing “your cause.” Roosevelt died the following month at the Little White House in Warm Springs, Ga. — sadly aware, one suspects, of the unceasing bloodshed between Jews and Arabs that lay ahead.

How about Roosevelt’s “Brain Trust”? Or the “Gold Dust Twins”?

Both names were concocted by media, and were not official groups as such. The "Brain Trust" was a select group of presidential advisors from academia, just about all of them from Ivy League universities. It turns out that your guy Ben Cohen, a law professor, was considered by many to be one of the "Brain Trust," though not in the original group. He is about the only one of these influential academics who was Jewish; most of them definitely were not. That correlates with the fact that Jews in academia back then were rather unusual because of discrimination and immigration patterns (a good percentage of the Jewish population consisted of relatively recent immigrants).

Ben Cohen was also one of the "Gold Dust Twins." The other was not Jewish. Haven't the faintest idea as to why they were given that name, since their policies certainly didn't get the country out of the Great Depression soon enough.

Why is that so hard.to understand? Like Stalin, FDR had an elite inner circle of Jewish collaborators doing terrible things, and the rest of the Jews were ignored.

In the case of Stalin, the "rest of the Jews" were not only ignored, but persecuted, denied any opportunity for Jewish religious, cultural, or ethnic activities or institutions. In addition, for the most part, they were not permitted to emigrate or even travel outside the country. As to "the elite inner circle of Jewish collaborators," that bunch was thinned out dramatically by the purges and show trials.

Roosevelt was lionized in myth by too many American Jews ignorant of the true history of his presidency. That mythology had a great tendency to be passed on down through the generations, and is exemplified by the overly praiseworthy comments of this Oshinsky, the writer of the posted New York Slimes book review.

The history of Bolshevism as presented by Alfred Rosenberg runs as deep as the czarist Jew-hate that preceded it. Some FReepers don’t know where their version of history comes from, and some, sadly, do.

The Soviets fought quite hard in Ukraine. They lost entire army groups. Well over 1 million dead.

I believe that the Soviet Union lost about 20 million people, military plus civilian, in WWII. It was the largest number of any nation.

However, it should be remembered that Soviet military losses were significantly increased by strategies manifesting a reckless disregard on the part of many Soviet officers and officials for the lives of their own troops.
