We recently did a head-to-head comparison of the benefits of living in California versus those for Texas.
California won by a hair.
The impetus for the piece was the burgeoning rivalry between the two states, which heated up after Texas Gov. Rick Perry ran a series of ads touting his state's friendlier business climate.
But we wanted to narrow in a bit more on all the things California has to offer that Gov. Perry may have ignored. To be clear, we have nothing against Texas — some of us are products of their finest schools.
We just think people need to be reminded that the Golden State still has a lot going for it.
1) California has lower property tax rates.
The average is 0.80%, compared with Texas' 1.74%.

2) College graduation rates there are impressive.
California graduates 34.8% of its college students in four years, and 65.1% in six. Compare that with 24.4% and 49.0%, respectively, for Texas.

3) Students get better SAT scores (though slightly fewer take them).
The average California high school student's score is 1513. In Texas it's 1446.

4)The state is above average in terms of children enrolled in day care.
Just 39% of kids are not enrolled in child care in California. In Texas? 44%.

5) If you're a Californian, you're less likely to die.
The 2010 mortality rate for California was 646.8 per 100,000. In Texas it's 772.3.

Facts misinterpreted and inappropriately compared. Compares meaningless facts that the authors try to convince the reader are separable, but really influenced by other more intangible things like freedom, sovereignty and the like. Largely cherry picked useless information.

Having more kids enrolled in day care is not necessarily better, except to the parents-by-remote-control. Those parents who actively raise their children, or even *gasp* homeschool them, wouldn’t have them enrolled in day care, without this being anything bad or disfavorable. (Similarly, if CA had more people on welfare, food stamps, or living in public housing, that wouldn’t be better either.)
As far as I’m concerned, the frame titled ‘double bonus’ only advantage that matters.
Why? So they can turn those states blue too. Such as Colorado. (Regrettably.)

I think that number lower because I suspect a larger number of people that reach retirement age pick up and move out of CA. Thus they die in some other location. A retirement/relocation number would be interesting.
61% of Californian kids are being watched by people other than their parents, and that is a GOOD thing? Not too thrilled with 56% of Texan kids in the same situation, but more kids in day care is awful!
Well now, that should be pretty embarrassing for Californians. That list is the best they could do?
California probably has more trees too, they forgot about that on. I’m sure there are more spotted owls in CA. That’s relevant based on what they are presenting.
Most of what is in this piece points to CA government spending and nanny state control, which CA is obviously bery proud of.
Heck, any such comparisons can be manipulated, based on whatever criteria people use. Here, certain criteria were cherry picked to make California look better.
And, there is background info missing. For example, they indicate that California has a lower average property tax rate. But, housing and business property is much more expensive in California. So, the actual property tax burden may well be more in California, if a lower rate is applied to a higher property value basis.

This is farcically easy to rebut.
The property tax claim is monumentally dumb simply because in TX houses are not massively inflated in value due to land use restrictions like they are in CA. Paying 2x the tax rate on a house with is 1/4 the assessed value, isn’t too intimidating.
Also the idea that more kids are in child care is a good thing boggles the mind. I mean does this moron think that for the lack of child care, the kids are feral or something? The kids are probably with their mothers instead.
As for the SAT scores, damn I didn’t realize how bad SAT score inflation had gotten. Back in my day average was meant to be 1000-1100. The scores they cite as average now used to be elite. I can assure people this is not due to smarter kids.
This is all true dear Liberals. Please stay in your lovely state of California.

This is a total BS article.
The first item mentioned was higher property taxes in Texas, but remember the price of property in CA is in most cases 4-10 time higher. So, the taxes paid in Texas are MUCH less on the same property.
I have seen the tripe before, it is nonsense.
