Interesting story of how they transported the Blackbird of Project OXCART, it was known that the A-12s would be built in the SkunkWorks within the Lockheed Plant complex in Burbank, California and that the A-12s would have to be transported overland to Area 51 for flight testing, development and training of the Project Pilots. Photo's and planning story

it's easy to tell the difference from the chines on the front of the SR-71 that the A-12 doesn't have

“At one time we could DO things like that”

On a similar note, IIRC the Saturn rockets used for the Apollo missions could not be made today - the plans are lost. OTOH, a local company is working on fusion propulsion.

I recently read an article on what website I can’t recall, but the article said that there is a Company who is going to reverse engineer the engines from the Saturn 5 and manufacture them.

What they dis is they went to a number of museums that had the engines and disassembled them, then scanned the parts into a computer system.

The main engines for the Saturn 5 are supposed to be the most powerful rocket engines ever built.

One thing about the SR-71 it got from here to there quickly and was never damaged in flight during its missions over hostile territory.

One day in 1976 when I was an Airman stationed at McClellan AFB in the Tech Control Facility, I saw a huge black shadow fly very low over my apartment in Sacramento. I went into work the next day, got on the shoutdown orderwire to the control tower and asked if the SR 71 flew in yesterday. The guy at the tower almost climbed down my throat saying, "Who Is This?!" I calmly told him I was calling from the TCF and just wondered... I was assured that movements of aircraft were never discussed. One more lesson in what "the need to know" actually meant.

Years later my brother told me he saw it fly in and out all the time when he was stationed in England.
