Is It Okay To Change A Baby’s Diaper In Public If There’s No Restroom Changing Table? [w/poll]

The reality of babies and young toddlers it that they’re gonna go when they’re gonna go, and parents will need to change their diapers. But what if a business like Starbucks doesn’t have a changing table in the restroom — is it okay for a parent to take care of diaper duty in the public seating area? One woman did, and Starbucks employees ended up calling the cops.

Here’s how it all went down, according to 9News.com in Denver: A mom had to change her one-year-old son’s diaper while she was on a coffee run at Starbucks Friday night, but realized there was no changing table in the store’s restroom. So she simply changed him in the seating area.

“As a mother, you have to do what you have to do. Wherever you have to do it,” she said. ”I just kind of wiped him off, cleaned him off as quickly as I could.”

While it’s unclear what kind of mess needed cleaning, her husband says a Starbucks employee was rude to his wife nonetheless, and tossed a rag to her while speaking in what he claims was a “demeaning tone.”

“He said make sure to wipe the seat when you’re done,” he said. “They started talking amongst themselves and laughing about it.”

He got so mad, he says, he dumped his venti coffee on the floor, saying, “Make sure you clean that.”

Strong words and hand gestures were exchanged, he says, and the store called the police to report a disturbance. No one was arrested, but a Starbucks spokesperson said the company is “concerned,” has “apologized to the [redacted] family,” and wants all customers treated with “dignity and respect.”

The woman says if Starbucks had provided a changing table in a restroom, she never would’ve had to do it in public. Which begs the question:

Yep - that’s what I do. Take the kid out to the car. Sure, treat her with dignity, but why does this woman expect everyone to make accommodations for her?

Or do so in the stroller outside, or on a diaper changing pad you carry in the diaper bag or on a blanket.
I’ve had two kids. And I know that no one wants poop near their food or the disease risk it brings anywhere near one’s food.

Changing a boy's diaper has it's risks too. Something you quickly learn.

Spraying urine all over the place in a public area is not a good idea. And then there is the feces. Definitely a health hazard.

The answer is NO!

I actually saw a woman change a baby on the table of a restaurant. Also saw a pic of two babies sitting at restaurant table on pottie chairs.

If she had a car outside, she could have laid him down on the seat. That’s gross on a restaurant seat. And, I’m a mother of three!

I thought the poll would have way more people opposed to changing a babies’ diaper in public

Strange that.

The libs in Denver will now demand all business install changing stations in all men & women's restrooms.

Starbucks will apologize for their employee being rude and insensitive.

There was/is no compelling reason for this young mom to immediately change her infants diaper in Starbucks or any food establishment that doesn't provide a baby changing station. Beyond utter lack of respect for the patrons of the establishment, there are issues for the child as well. Diapers need to be changed in a secure and relatively safe/clean area. A restaurant, where a child can reach under the table/counter/seat is like placing unsavory bacteria directly within that infant's reach.

Witnessing soiled diapers discarded in parking lots, on walking paths is a sign of decaying society. Another pet peeve is watching patrons leave their candy wrappers, beverages and spilled popcorn behind in a pathetic mess as they leave movie theatres. Just disgusting and pathetic.

My mother and other women I observed a long time ago could lay a baby across their laps and change diapers. This was in the cloth diaper and big baby pin times. I could never master this.

LOL, true.

And you’re absolutely right about people not washing up. I avoid public restrooms when I can, but I’ve seen plenty women leave without washing, or else run their hands under plain water.

There is a right place for everything and a diaper change in a dining area is NOT the Right place. What’s the matter with the mother? she Couldn’t take the tyke to the ladies room and do the clean up there?

I wouldn’t want to be sitting in that area and knowing that is going on.
And I have kids.

Idiot.

Would she change a diaper on her dining room table? Kitchen counter?

Seriously ...

Do modern diaper bags still come with a pad to put underneath the baby? I used to use one before changing stations became commonplace. All most bathrooms ever had was a small vanity counter, if at all.

Our youngest is 24. For several years we simply did not go places without a plan for taking care of this type situation. Many places we just wouldn't take our infant children.

Different times, I guess.

(the father)says, he dumped his venti coffee on the floor, saying, “Make sure you clean that.” because he felt the employees were being demeaning to his wife.

What a classy couple.

My first too were before changing tables
You can find private spots to clean them up

Even the floor of a closet or clean bathroom...in their carrier.....

Carry spare cloth diapers and plenty of wipes

Cloth diaper to lay them on

Common sense

But last place is where folks eat especially if its an older baby

With my gradkids, I do not remember one.
It is easy to bring along a cover or blanket is needed.
I mean there are even paper towels you can put on the floor, if you need to.
