That’s one of the few great scenes in that movie — despite the many problems it has, I’ve probably watched it 50 times, and have bought it on VHS (the original narrated version, and the Director’s Cut), DVD, and BluRay. :’)
Overall I love it, though yea, there are some less than stellar moments. But Rutger Hauer can do no wrong ;)
The soundtrack with Vangelles is incredible.
I have totally hated the "save the whales" mentality, and the morons who embrace it, without reservation for decades.
In spite of that, this is my favorite ST movie and, if I understand correctly, world-wide the most successful of the series.
It was cleverly written, the humor was pervasive and, as entertainment, for me the best of the bunch.
I consider Star wars as Conservative, Rebels fighting against an evil empire.
Star Trek is a liberal prophesy, sheep and lions coexisting, ultimate Police State with star cruisers, supremacy through humanitarian compassion, liberal compassion, liberal bullshit.
I have a special connection to the original Star Trek. I saw every episode several times, and saw them all again after my daughter was born (Georgetown, Walsh School of Foreign Service, '94) When she was around 8, she saw her favorite episode, Devil in the Dark, when I realized that the series had universal appeal for all ages that were blessed with intelligence, imagination, a sense of humor and intrinsic humanity.
Hard combination to beat.
But Deep Space 9 made them one of the best parts of the show.
On the other hand, even Star Trek at its worst (IMO, the molasses paced "Veeger" one) cannot hold a distant candle to the sheer torture of Jar Jar Binks.

Star Wars was wonderful, but it is a soap opera at heart, much like Game of Thrones, The Borgias, and all of the hyper-produced mega shows today; they're just Falcon Crest and Knot's Landing with more exotic settings and better lighting. One can imagine the stereotypical organ riff after DV says "I am your father". Dun, dun, duuuuuuuuuuuuun!
I can tune to a TNG episode late at night, relax, and enjoy an episode without wondering what happened the previous week. It was truly an adventure of the week franchise, even most of the movies.
Never.
They were replaced by solid state components.
I got burned out by both for a time and James Bond. Just coming around to Bond again despite knowing Skyfall was the first movie without a book either written before hand or released in conjunction with the movie. But of the two I like Star Trek a little better due to The Next Generation and Voyager series’ on tv. I kind of lost track of the movies back when a movie with the Next Generation and Deep Space Nine characters came out. Then I watched Enterprise but when the show was canned I quit. Don’t much care for the new films. But looking forward to a series in the works with some of the Next Generation guys involved.
I also liked the original Star Wars movies and the other ones done in the 90s and 00s were ok and they helped tell the early part of the story so I am ok with it. But the idea of doing more is not exciting me. Bad enough that some of The Star Wars stories were made into a cartoon that Cartoon Network ran.
Star Trek is the one with the right message: take risks, get along, do cool stuff. Put your life on the line for your friends. No greater love.
Star Wars seeks supernatural powers through discipline, ways to manipulate others. I liked Star Wars, the first three anyway -- and I even get the "feel the force" thing, and in a way believe it. The "greater love" thing in Star Wars is kind of moot because, as in the case of Obi Wan, laying down his life rang kind of hollow because he moved on to an even more powerful place and shows up on occasion to participate.
Star Trek was about meeting the future successfully, taking risks, being righteous. More conservative, to me.
Star Trek TOS had a cartoon series as well.
Devil in the dark, that’s Shatners favorite episode. Mine is “This side of paradise” The meaning of life is in that episode. Huge lesson of want and need, discipline and control. THAT one I must have watched a thousand times no joke. Seriously, I watch that episode at least once a week. Jill Ireland the wife of Charles Bronson is in the lead. To call that episode genius is like calling Einstein slightly smart. It blows my mind every time I see it.

He is directing the current Star trek movies, but will be directing the upcoming Star Wars one. He wanted to do his own Star trek series apart from the one Michael Dorn has pitched and is trying to jump start. But he has had issues in getting licensing so he has dropped the idea.
Abrams wrote and produced feature films before co-creating the television series Felicity (1998–2002). He also created Alias (2001–2006) and co-created Lost (2004–2010), Fringe (2008–2013), Undercovers (2010) and produced the television series Person of Interest (2011–present), Alcatraz (2012) and Revolution (2012–present), among others.
His directorial film work includes two Star Trek films, Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), along with Mission: Impossible III (2006) and Super 8 (2011). He will also direct Star Wars Episode VII (2015), the first film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.[1] Abrams produced the films Cloverfield (2008), Morning Glory (2010), and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011).

The opening crawl of Star Wars is certainly not original since it was directly inspired by the old time serials which Star Wars was a homage to. Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers weren’t the only serials using the crawl as I have seen it in other old time serials as well. Seeing the crawl in serials decades prior to Star Wars was an eye opener but as many had noted Star Wars was a mish mash of old movie references and homages. If you were a movie buff you could see a lot of it at the time. This wiki article explains it.

Another difference is that Star Trek TOS left a lot to the imagination. It didn’t matter that it was plywood sets and fiberglas boulders. Your imagination took hold and you ignored the sets and got involved with the actors telling the story. You became friends with Spock and Kirk and Bones.
In Star Wars, everything was laid out in intricate detail and left little for the imagination to work on. It was not as personal, and in fact, many preferred the evil Darth Vader character.
