Abandoned dog adopts kitten after pair are rescued from ravine [w/video]

A loving dog has adopted a baby kitten after the stranded pair were rescued from a ravine in South Carolina.

An animal welfare officer was called to the scene in North Pointe Creek last week after a resident heard the Shih Tzu mix’s screams.

Animal control officer Michelle Smith was surprised to find the dog protecting a five-week-old kitten tangled in bushes at the bottom of a small embankment.

‘I didn’t know what to think,’ she explained. ‘I was shocked and surprised.’

‘I’m thinking that it just couldn’t get back up with the kitten, and I don’t think it was willing to leave the kitten.’

The pair are now being cared for at Anderson County P.A.W.S, where the five-year-old canine has been caring for the young kitten.

‘It would be like one of us seeing a neglected or abandoned child and taking it under our wing,’ said shelter director Jessica Cwynar.

She said the dog was going through a ‘pseudo pregnancy’ and producing milk for the kitten.

‘She’s producing some, but not all that the kitten will need nutrition-wise,’ she added, saying the kitten was also being bottle-fed.

The shelter is hoping that if the dog’s owners come forward they will also be willing to adopt the kitten.

Too bad the human race doesn’t have the humanity of a typical dog.

Humans could learn a lot from animals about compassion and love.

Poor kitty, it’s going to grow up thinking it’s a Shih Tzu....

Nothing worse than a cat that runs around yapping at everyone that comes to the door........

It could be worse. At least the kitty isn’t being raised by a Maltese...
