Two Pennsylvania parents have been arrested after police say motorists spied a 10-year-old girl riding in a dog cage in the back of the family pickup truck.

The incident happened at around 7pm Monday on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Millvale, just outside Pittsburgh, according to police.

Officers responded to the scene after getting reports from passing driver who saw the girl riding in the back of the truck in the cage.

Maybe she wanted to ride with her pet? What’s wrong with that?

I’d rather travel with a dog than most humans.

I feel fortunate that I experienced childhood and adolescence in the happy days before political correctness—before things like riding in the beds of pickup trucks, stake-bed trucks and station wagons became felonies.

People probably worried she was a kidnap victim or a domestic slave or something. They can’t tell that it’s her parent(s) driving.

If she is unharmed and all that, I assume they won’t be charged. Except for perhaps the seatbelt violation.

If I saw a kid in the back of a car in a dog cage I’d be tempted to call. It’s not very normal. I’d worry about whether I saw something terrible and did nothing.

That was my first thought. At that age, kids would think something like that is just awesome.

Agreed, but I’m thinking that the dog part wasn’t the issue. ;^)

LOL!
That was great!

But back to the topic, it's not that she was in a cage with her dog in the back of a truck that would concern me, but that she was in the cage in the back of a truck traveling on a turnpike.
Traveling down a two lane or dirt road at 35 MPH or less...no real big issue. Not wise, but not necessarily inherently dangerous or against the law.
I'm not sure what the vehicle safety laws are in PA regarding passengers riding in open pickup truck beds, but here in Florida, it is very much “against the law”, not to mention insane, to transport live humans, unsecured, in the back of a truck while traveling at legal speeds of 70 MPHs on our turnpikes and highways.

Just saying....

The news I saw on television, which included an interview with her parents stated the girl had been removed from the home by Child Protective Services, and the child was staying with relatives.

Parents.

During an interview, Fishinger, who was driving the truck, said they were heading home when the dog started crying, they did not have place in the pick-up truck cabin to take the dog in, so they stopped at the side of the road and told the 10-year-old to go into the cage and take care of the dog.

“The man sounds like an animal lover who does not want his dog to suffer, but in this case, he put his dog before his step-daughter, and that is not ok,” Kevin Allen, 24, of Allentown, Pennsylvania, told YourJewishNews.com when asked for his opinion on the incident.

“I did not want the dog to suffer,” Fishinger said. “That’s like animal cruelty to me, you know, to let the dog cry like that,” he added.

“She plays with the dog in the cage all the time. She was strapped in, I did not think it was that big of a deal and we were not going fast,” the mother said.

The child endangerment rap against Fishinger was his second felony collar in recent days, according to court records. He was named last Thursday in a criminal complaint charging him with 18 counts of identity theft and access device fraud (15 of the counts are felonies). He was freed from custody Friday after posting $5000 bail.

Sounds like dad is guilty of bad judgement.

Do we know what kind of a dog it is?

Heaven forbid it is a pit bull...that would do it right there for many.

Lots of conflicting info out there:

**They were released on their own recognizance and the girl is currently in the care of Carlson’s mother.**
