Wild snake hunters from Diyala revealed on Thursday June 6 that the price of the viper known as the “Jewish Viper” has risen due to its use in “Black Magic”, stressing that the price of one snake amounts to one million Dinars.
“Some of Baghdad’s citizens offer to sell Jewish vipers which led to an increase in its price to 1 million dinars”, said snake hunter Abu Wadah El Qaisi, 30 years old, in a statement to Alsumaria.
“Available information show that most of these snakes are used for black magic which is considered to be one of the most dangerous magic in the world”, clarifies Al Qaisi. He noted that “they think that a certain jinn (evil spirits) live within the snake”.
“Snake hunting wasn’t a career until recently. Previously we used to kill snakes since they caused damage to the citizens especially in agricultural lands. We hunted wild animals and sold them to special shops in Baghdad where they are mummified”, added Al Qaisi.
Snake hunting proliferated in the past few years as the demand on these snakes increased especially the Jewish snakes characterized with a big head, a slim neck, a strong body, a long tail and 8 fangs.
“Jewish vipers are used in many fields related to making medicine for cancer, boldness and paralysis. Many people seek to buy it”, said Rabah Qais who owns a modest shop for medicinal herbs ie. Arab medicine, in a statement to Alsumaria.
Qais reported that he “sold a fully-grown Jewish snake for 1 million Iraqi Dinars to a merchant in Baghdad who also asked for more”. He clarified that “the merchant did not want to use the snake for medicine but for magic”. “Diyala gathers 17 different species of snakes including the deadly Jewish snake with the lethal bite”, told wild animal hunter Aala Mussa from Al Mokdadiyah district (located at 35 km north east of Baaqubah). He confirmed that hunting these snakes is not a piece of cake. “The Jewish snakes are widely spread in the agricultural lands and can reach a length of up to 1 meter”, added Mussa; emphasizing that “the number of these snakes is quite limited as they only live in certain regions in Baaqubah and Al Mokdadiyah”.
“Jewish snakes are used as a main ingredient in some Indian black magic spells whose talismans were recently transferred to our country due to the high demand”, commented local voodoo man Abu Wafa’, 40.
“Most spells where the snake is used help solve problems between couples, cure physical pain and exorcize jinn from the processed”.

The dorsal coloration looks *sort of* like a Russell’s viper, but again, not quite right.

It’s a big grouper. It got it’s name because the Jewish sailors (and there were a lot of Jewish sailors in the Carribean — long story, but related to not being able to own land) preferred it because it is both good eating and kosher.

I'd think a "David Grouper" would be more appropriate. "Goliath Grouper" should be the "Philistine Fish".
