With all the latest political controversy and looming legislation over gun ownership and Second Amendment rights, it is no wonder many Americans are making the important decision to invest in a gun. In fact, there have been 72,005,482 background checks for gun purchases since President Barack Obama took office in 2008, according to FBI data.
The Daily Caller decided to send this reporter to gun stores in the D.C.-Metro area to document purchasing a handgun from a females perspective, recording what recommendations I received and why, as well as how I was treated.
My proposal was simple: I am a young female looking for a handgun for home defense, with the ability to be used for concealed carry down the road, and willing to spend $500 to $600

Sounds like some of the shops are nearly as clueless as some of the legislators. 9mm equal to the effectiveness of a .45 or .40? The larger the gun the more velocity of the round? Maybe the writer misunderstood some of the info provided. Barrel length/velocity.
The reporter's first stop should have been The Cornered Cat.
“The bigger the gun, the higher the velocity of the round”.
Really? Really are the reporters that clueless? Size of the gun has nothing to do with velocity. It’s the bullet and load.
. . . and the barrel length (see post #2).
In DC they can own handguns that hold up to 18 rounds?

Home defense = shotgun
Wonder if they also told her that the loud bang is from the bullet breaking the sound barrier.
Better yet: In d.c. you can own a gun? Well yeah, you can but if you followed Emily Millers quest to be a legal gun owner in d.c. it is a daunting task indeed. Hoopsville. And the d.c. cops are NOT very helpful and throw up all sorts of hurdles to jump over. The bad guys on the other hand couldn’t give two damns what the cops have to say. Weird huh? Law abiders wrapped up in red tape, bad guys just go about their business undeterred. Obviously more laws are needed.
Guess nobody mentioned “silencers” and sub-sonic ammo.
For home defense, I felt I needed more cartridges available after those 6 shots. For easy use and price, I got a Ruger 22LR and have two 25 cartridge magazines (Hussein isn't getting my magazines). All my ammo is hollow point.
I already had a Colt 38 upstairs next to my bed but nothing downstairs and I wanted to keep that loaded Colt upstairs at all times. I have been to gun ranges with this Colt so I wasn't new to shooting and hitting a target.
For small animals and at home target practice, I got a Walther PPG pellet handgun. It doesn't have the blow back feature, so it is quiet for using in town. I got a target box to capture the pellets so I could use it in the back garden and not have lead pellets all around for my little dog to “eat”.
I have two long guns that are too heavy for me, Remington rifle and Remington shotgun but I did buy ammo for those late last year. All my ammo is in Ammo boxes with O2 absorbers except for small ammo boxes next to the handguns and 22 rifle.
The Judge is illegal in my state.
Barrel length without bullet and load does nothing. Length of barrel influences the range that the bullet and load will produce. A particular bullet/load will have an upper and lower velocity, based on short vs long barrel. But the bullet and loading will be the driver.
M1911A1, best pistol in the world and good exercise carrying it around....plus, the ultimate in INTIMADATION factor...ever looked at one from the barrel....
I stared down the barrel of a .22 with my ex and it looked like a .50 from my view point. LOL!
This article is a very cheap imitation..The DC , while it does occasionally have some very good pieces, and has some excellent reporters, like Neil Munro, has become far more tabloid
Ah, another weakling like me..I had that problem with most handguns, until I tried a Walther PPS. I love it. BTW, I also have that problem with pump shotguns, so I prefer a Saiga..easy peasy.
You might want to try the old WWII lugar. It is a 9mm that is easy to operate the action.
I have small bones, my wrists are small and getting older just made it worse. I can't handle a 10 inch iron skillet. My wrists give way under that amount of weight.
I wear a AAA shoe. When I was younger, it was AAAA. Can you say narrow feet? My mother hated that since if the shoe was going to stay on, she had to pay more to get that AAAA. Only the most expensive store had them. I get shoe catalogs and can flip through them fast since they seem to think everyone wears a medium or wide.
It was frustrating not being able to pull back a slide. I could envision the bad guy standing there waiting until I was ready to fire. The clerk immediately dumped those pistols and went to revolvers. He suggested the Ruger 38 special and it was fine in my hand, then I questioned the amount of strength needed to pull the trigger. He went to the safe and got one out that didn't have a lock on it and held it behind his back until he got to me and had me hold it down so no one could see while I pulled the trigger. I pulled it and it was fine.
A clerk is supposed to only give a buyer one with a lock on the trigger to look at. I don't know if that is just an Academy rule or is a rule everywhere.
I don't have a problem with the 22LR.
