Korean News Station Pokes Fun at KTVU after Southwest Incident
Slothed ^ | 7-23-2013 | James Poling

title was too long:

Do I have to excerpt something so short??

You probably remember KTVU’s royal eff up with reading obviously fake Asian names for the pilots of the Asiana crash. Names like “Wi To Lo” and “Ho Lee Fuk”.

It looks like a Korean news agency is having some fun at KTVU’s expense. After the landing gear failure of the Southwest flight at LGA they showed this graphic with American pilot names “Captain Kent Parker Wright”, “Co-Captain Wyatt Wooden Workman”.

They even went as far as making up fake names for people to interview. Flight instructor “Heywood U. Flye-Moore” and skeptical passenger “Macy Lawyers”.

Well played Korean TV, well played.

I see the humor. It's a little bit irresponsible, but I'm not offended. And I know enough about people at Southwest Airlines: they might not think it is funny, but they aren't going to threaten anyone over it.

The South Korean airline made the classic mistake of forgetting the "Streisand effect": by threatening to take legal action, they simply called more attention to their problems.

I liked the passenger named “Macy Lawyers”. That was original.

There are a lot of websites but I like these:

http://www.dramafever.com

http://www.viki.com

http://www.kshownow.net (not as user friendly, IMO)

As always, you will quickly find TV Tropes that will be humorous.. eventually.

Someone always gets a piggy-back ride somewhere in the series is one.

They make it way way too obvious who will end up with who in the dramas. One show that didn’t was “Coffee House”.

Don’t always expect happy endings, especially if its not formulaic (those who watch a lot of Kdrama will recognize the formula shows rather quickly).

A lot of them have stories that drag. They can turn the same story into a 90 minute TV movie or a 16 episode series it seems like.

They are mostly pretty low-budget (compared to US shows) but there are exceptions like IRIS (a 20-episode show that cost something like $17 million)
....

I found that Chinese grates on me (although I can endure it if Rainie Yang is on screen), Japanese shows were not my cup of tea. The Korean language doesn’t hurt my ears.
.....

Variety shows like “Running Man” are pretty funny. I don’t even much like the cast individually but the show is good.

I remember one or two shootings in the US by Koreans, at least one might have been partially angered by being made fun of by his name.

Thanks, I’ll definitely check them out. I enjoyed some Japanese series in the past on local channels, but they’re long gone or shown without subtitles. Always looking for original, non-formulaic dramas, and other than Doc Martin on PBS, I don’t watch anything these days.

The shows I would recommend for newbies ..... different types of shows.

Secret Garden - One of the best Korean shows ever. Tropes include “girls like the arrogant guys”. Body switching.

Rooftop Prince - Time travel sends prince to modern time where he meets the dopplegangers or reincarnations of his murdered fiance and her sister.... Very funny in many places because the guys from the past each wear their own colors, some called them Joseon [era] Power Rangers.

Dream High - think Glee without the gay... light-hearted fluff. If you like that kind of thing.

49 Days - Girl in coma is told by the reaper that she has 49 days to gather the tears of 3 people who truly loved her (excluding family) or she will die (before her time). In bhuddist culture they say your spirit hangs around for 49 days before it moves on.
.........

and you’ll need at least one show where girl pretends to be a boy :p

“You’re Beautiful” (another translation was ‘She’s a handsome man’) PLUS: Park Shin-hye! or “Coffee Prince” would do well. PLUS: Yoon Eun-hye!

she actually thought she was saying it correctly. I pronounced the word slowly for her "X-R-A-Y". She followed with "X-L-A-Y". In spite of her intelligence she apparently could not tell the difference. I asked her to pronounce my office manager's first name of Ryan. To my amazement, she said it correctly. I left the conversation completely confused and I remain that way today.
I think the current thinking is that children are born with the ability to hear the sounds of any language - but in the process of learning their native tongue, they tend to lose the ability to hear subtle distinctions of sounds which aren’t used in the native tongue.

The difference between the “L” sound and the “R” sound is very clear - to you. To you friend, strange as it seems, that distinction is inaudible.

Netflix has some of them and Hulu picks up most of Drama Fever’s shows(not Running Man, though).

My favorite is “A Gentleman’s Dignity” and I just finished “Flower Boy Next Door” (also stars Park Shin Hye) and thought it was great. Heartstrings is another musical one, set in college (more Park Shin Hye). The lead guy and the drummer are in a band together in real life and they aren’t too bad. I would love to see them live.

I also loved “My Husband Got a Family” which isn’t available in the US.

I don’t speak Korean yet, although I have picked up words and phrases. Sometimes I am surprised to understand something without the subtitles, sometimes just the gist. I guess I have watched a lot of them. I could post an incomplete list of the series I have watched but it’d be kinda long.

There is a lot of subbed Running Man episodes (between episodes 89 and 150) on Youtube.
