La Grande doctor arrested in connection to Aug. 15 Glass Hill cattle killing

A La Grande doctor was charged with seven counts of aggravated animal abuse and first-degree criminal mischief in connection with cattle shootings earlier this month.

Joel D. Rice, 57, was arrested Thursday night following a two-week investigation by the Union County Sheriff’s Office into the shooting of seven cows on Glass Hill Road on Aug. 15.

Six cows died as a result, according to police.

Police say the dead cattle were discovered on Rice’s property.

Capt. Craig Ward with the sheriff’s office said on the day of the incident, Rice came home and the cattle were blocking his
driveway.

“He was pretty upset about that,” Ward said.

The cows were shot with a rifle, police said.

Aside from the OBVIOUS stupidity, this was not a logical thing to do from even the most selfish perspective.

Surely it would be easier to shoo seven cows off of your driveway than it would be to haul seven dead cow carcasses off of your driveway.

Sounds like the Ft. Hood shooter. Some soldiers were standing ahead of him in line.

Wait, a minute....He was upset that cattle were blocking his way, so he shot them?? That leaves a major problem, as a practical matter....

That guy's as sharp as a box full of bowling balls....

Aha!!! FTA:

Ward said the area was previously open range, but that Rice had led an effort to create a livestock district and make the land closed range.

Rice was POed the cattle were there, period. Given a chance, he'd shoot the livestock owners.

Yep, it sounds like he moved there and got a group together to get rid of the open range listing and succeeded.

I’d say the Doc is not well liked by the ranchers and vice versa but the Doc is going to pay for that beef, I hope they were big and ready for market. :-)

If they had been somebody’s dog(s) on another person’s property, certain freepers would have been cheering him on and/or bragging about how they’d do the same thing.

Cows on the loose don’t bite anyone as a rule. OTH, they WILL eat your most expensive landscaping and fertilize your lawn in a BIG way.

Where I grew up, loose cows, hogs, horses you name it, was just a way of life.

Cows HATE brooms, they run at the sight of one.

So why did the shrink blast away at seven good cows? I’m thinking he suddenly got a big hankering for some fresh jerky.

Cause if that isn’t the case, this guy belongs in his own straight jacket.

Makes me want to know the rest of the story.

He led a movement to close the range land. Pissed off all the area ranchers, I bet.
How many times had he come home to find, as the article stated, cattle from multiple ranches wandering in his yard and crapping all over the place.
How cooperative were the local deputies in the midst of an old fashioned range war.

Once upon a time in a range war, someones cattle ended up on your land one too many times, you had fresh steaks.

"Cows on the loose don’t bite anyone as a rule."

True. Nevertheless, I would also aver that you are putting your implicit trust in Kelly Ducote of The Observer and her editors to differentiate between "cows" and, "bulls". I do not. Note also that the citations from law enforcement, while not direct quotes, use the terms, "cattle," or, "livestock," rather than the more generic, "cows." For my money, I would much rather have a strange dog of any breed on my property than a disoriented, confused (much less enraged) bull on my property.

My post was not to imply that a person doesn't have a right to shoot a threatening animal, but simply to compare the doctor's actions to the remarks typically found on the Chet_99 tribute threads, in which certain FReepers pledge to shoot their neighbor's pitbulls, "if they ever set foot on my property," (or in some cases, to surreptitiously poison them on their own property) regardless of the threat they actually may pose.

I’d like to hear the whole story, but by the sounds of it Rice wanted everything around him to change to suit his preferences and when he didn’t get his own way - Blam.

I’d be curious to know where he stands on gun control. I’d give odds he’s for it (for everyone else but not for himself).
