Boys could be spiked from New York high school girls' volleyball team

Two boys playing on a girls’ volleyball team at a New York high school could see their playing time spiked when league officials consider modifying a rule that allows them to play with the fairer sex.

Seniors Andrew Lafortezza and Jason Elbaum both played for the co-ed volleyball club last season at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua. But due to budgetary constraints, the Quakers were unable to field a boys’ team this year, prompting the teens to seek a spot on the girls’ squad, which they earned after receiving approval from league officials in August.

...

Kim Cleary, the boys’ volleyball coach at Suffern High School, took issue with Kuczma’s characterization that the boys do not dominate play. In 2007, she was an assistant coach on a girls’ team that played against another team with a boy on its roster and the result wasn’t favorable for Cleary.

“Having coached both boys and girls and being around this sport for 20 years, I can attest that it absolutely makes a difference,” she told FoxNews.com. “Even if they’re not hitting at the front, they’re blocking at the front of the net. There’s absolutely no reason Horace Greeley couldn’t have formed a team and been part of our league. Those two boys are taking two spots from two girls.”

It’s really fun when liberal dogmas are proven to contradict each other.
Problem is, the liberal mind has no problem holding contradictory thoughts at the same time.

as long as I pay taxes, my gender will receive at least an equal amount of benefits....

Title Nine has been a total success and has enabled thousands and thousands of girls to attend college who would never have had the chance, similar I might add, to boys.....

WNB-what? Is that the league where the employees stand out on the street on game day handing out free tickets and nobody shows?

you know that “go easy” mantra goes both ways....young girls know that they have to not act too smart to attract a boy...iows...they have to “go easy” on the boys and let the boys think their superior.....

does the school have football?...wrestling?....Title nine only says that the expenses of sports have to be somewhat equal, not that every sport has to be offered to everybody...

Thus proving the absurdity of the original rule.

They wanted to play volleyball, so they joined the only team available.

There are lots of club teams everywhere. The Y has teams. There are many options instead of playing on the girls team.

Here in MO the rule is that girls can play a boys sport in that sport is not offered for girls ie. girls can play football. Boys are only allowed (maybe, case by case) to play a girls sport if there is no athletic opportunity offered for boys. Reason; boys fundamentally change a girls sport, girls don't change a boys sport.

After ERA failed some states passed their own version, courts have ruled that boys must be permitted to play girls sports. Boys playing field hockey in MA comes to mind.

What, in your opinion, action should have these boys have taken, if any?

Find a volleyball club team. Join the AAU, and travel if necessary. Start an AAU team. Go to the Y.

So many options besides playing against girls.

That said, my daughter is playing professional basketball in Sweden. I haven't been able to beat her since 7th grade. But school sports should only allow girls to play up, not boys playing down.

Ah, would that be why you used "their" when you meant "they're?"

At least equal? So, should I take this to mean more than equal is OK with you as long as its your gender?

I am not against equality by any means. I am against artificial rules that hide behind the banner of equality. Case in point, in our military, to make it "equal", women get lower standards. That is not equal; that is preferential.

To you, does equal mean everyone has the exact same standard they are measured by, or does equal mean the standards are modified of some demographics (gender and otherwise) until the acceptance rate matches the demographic distribution?

Never saw the WNBA highlights (no great loss there), but just imagine if the NFL decided to change any particular team's lineup to include AT LEAST 50 percent females because the NOW hags were suing them into bankruptcy. Just try to imagine the fan's opinions on that.

And what about the outrageousness of every major league basketball team having so many black players when they only make up about 9 percent of the populace? Where's the bloody fairness of that?

Right, then; nothing personal, sheila, but I would prefer not to pay ANY taxes in order to receive any "benefits". Taxes are supposed to provide for common necessities for the common good, not cookiejar handouts as some would selectively provide to others.

I am sure you meant to continue: "...their superior skills and manly features are not affecting the girls too strongly."

Really. That would explain why girls are demanding to play on the boys teams, because there are so many other options out there. But that is OK, because we need to lower the standards so the girls can play too, yes?

Seems like we have a lot of little boys on FR these days - the kind who would use the excuse “but she hit me first!”

Yes, it is unfair. Girls are simply not as strong as boys. In sports, you 'play up' if you can compete at a higher level. Playing down is lame.

Excellent post, you "play up", not down.....

Title IX was essential to allow girls the same opportunities in sports and subsequent college scholarships as boys have always had.

I have several friends whose daughters received college athletic scholarships, two for volleyball and another for softball, that would never have happened prior to IX.........

It's unfortunate for these two boys that their school couldn't field a boys volleball team but that's the way it goes.

Yes, but the school here had enough money to field a girls volleyball team, but not enough money to field a boys volleyball team. What's the deal with that?

Maybe the school's putting too much cash into the boys football program, the boy's basketball program and the boy's baseball program while totally ignoring the girls football team and the girls baseball team........

As a side note, maybe the hidden story here is the fact that there weren't enough boys interested in playing on an all male volleyball team in the first place.........

The two boys in question were reported to have played on a "CO-ED" team, NOT an all boys team..............
