JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Grambling canceled its football game against Jackson State after Grambling's disgruntled players refused to travel to Jackson for the game Saturday.

Friday's apparent player boycott was the latest in three days of upheaval for Grambling's proud program -- which rose to prominence under coach Eddie Robinson. Several media outlets have reported that players did not attend practice on Wednesday and Thursday because of issues with program and school leadership.
Grambling (0-7) has changed coaches twice in about two months. Doug Williams was fired two games into the season and replaced by George Ragsdale, who was reassigned Thursday and replaced by Dennis "Dirt" Winston.

Why? Somebody want them to sit in back?
A 100 yard field still costs money to maintain. 80 uniforms X 2 or 3 still cost money. 80 scholarships still cost money. Travel still costs money. The difference in costs of a small time program are not nearly the difference in revenues. The biggest difference in costs is coaching salaries.
Hell, the bands cost a zillion, and they are perhaps more important now than the teams, and they don’t create revenue per se.
If it weren’t for all the classic games - lving on the past glories - and the racial pressure on sponsors to pony up the cash, these programs would have folded long ago.

Oh, do alum checks flow into Grambling?
You are using an LSU model for Grambling......
The radio contract is lucky to pay expenses......and yes, these special “classic” games are where their money is....PC sponsor hold ups “justice brothers” style.
I don’t disagree with your basic thesis, that college football players should draw a paycheck on top of room, board, tuition.
I’m amused by the idea that virtually all other college sports teams - men and women - would have to find some other way to support themselves, besides getting subsidies from the football and basketball programs.
One other point.....
It’s still a pretty good deal for future NFL players, though.
The NCAA is like a minor league where young elite players develop physically and showcase their skills against other young elite players for 4 or 5 years.
Also, the coaching and the training facilities are the best in the world, and, completely “free.”
All in all, if I made it the the NFL, even for one year, I can’t imagine why I would criticize my college.
For those who have no shot at pro ball, well, they have a legitimate complaint about the money.
Maybe college teams should ask the NFL to pay the kids a salary?
Hopefully, your Grambling graduate boss does not read Free Republic!
um, wow.....if the money making programs in college....which are some footballteams, some basketball teams, and almost NO OTHER TEAMS AT ALL, get paid.....where does the money come from for all the non reveune sports?
College athetic departments, outside of a small number who make a ton, don’t make money. They bring in a ton of money, but they don’t turn profits.....
Not likely. Grambling grads aren’t exactly in the Free Republic demographic.
For what it is worth, another ‘victim’ of forced integration.
Like the poster said, before ‘FE’ the Black schools were powerhouses but when the ‘Ivy League’ starts bidding on people because of PC they take the ‘cream of the crop’—students and athletes— and the Black schools eventually have a problem surviving.
As wrong as Blacks not being ‘allowed’ to play Major League Baseball prior to ‘47, a lot of Blacks were against integration because they ‘knew’ the Major League teams would just strip them of the upper echelon of talent from the Negro Leagues, who were succesful but made people money rather than rich.
So the ‘super stars’ went out and made good money while the League and the 2nd rate players died on the vine, as there were no more ‘draws’ to fill the stadiums.
Should have done what Cumberland College did against Georgia Tech on October 7, 1916

Of course, the score was 222-0
Schools like Grambling have outlived their purpose, and not just on the football field. They should either adapt or close up shop altogether.
So they are the property of the school like chattel?
Man has to be rolling over. What a pity.
Really? What a bunch of straw bullsh-t.
Since you have demonstrated totaly ignorance of college scholarship athletes, let me give you short primer. They recieve a substantial value in return for their services. For a star athlete, the school gets the benefit. For an average or poor player, who still gets a scholarship, the school gets the raw end of the deal. But that's beside the point. They all enter into this arrangment voluntarily. Moreover, most of them dedicate their entire teen years to being offered a scholarship.....
That’s true...the fact that we no longer need “black colleges” is a good thing on the whole......and not just on the football field.
Maybe Grambling ought to boycott honoring their scholarships.
The REDSKINS!?!?!? You racist!!!!! /sarc if it’s needed
An acquaintance of mine, a former college quarterback, played in a college all star game in Japan with Williams. Williams refused to shake his hand because my acquaintance is white. So, he spit on Williams.
As if I give a rat's ass about any members of the entitlement class!
To Grambling & Jackson State... Just STFU & sign up for your 0dumbCare, for any students able to read or write after going to all black skools.
