Costco -- the Bible is fiction
foxnews.com ^ | 11/18/2013 | Todd Starnes

Posted on 11/18/2013 6:54:48 PM PST by massmike

What do the Bible, "The Hunger Games" and "Fifty Shades of Grey" have in common? All three are works of fiction, according to the booksellers at Costco.

Pastor Caleb Kaltenbach made that shocking discovery last Friday as he was shopping for a present for his wife at a Costco in Simi Valley, Calif. “All the Bibles were labeled as fiction,” the pastor told me. “It seemed bizarre to me.” Kaltenbach is the lead pastor at Discovery Church, a non-denominational Christian congregation in southern California.

He thought there must be some sort of mistake so he scoured the shelf for other Bibles. Every copy was plastered with a sticker that read, “$14.99 Fiction.” The pastor knew something must be amiss so he set off in search of a Costco employee hoping for an answer.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t find anyone willing to answer his question (which is not all that surprising if you’ve shopped at Costco).

I doubt they would label the Koran as fiction, Pastor Kaltenbach said. Heaven help us if they did.

So does the warehouse store that sells laundry detergent by the gallon have a problem with the Word of God? I called Costco headquarters in Issaquah, Wash. hoping to get answers. The nice lady who answered the phone told me she was aware of the issue and chalked it up to a “human error at a warehouse.” “It’s all fixed,” she said. But actually, it’s not fixed – because there’s a boatload of Bibles in the Simi Valley store still marked as fiction. At that point, the nice lady on the phone became not-so-nice and promptly informed me that Costco doesn’t talk to the press.

I’ll have to go to our local Costco and find out if any of the fiction labeled Bibles made it to Houston.

Well this is going to make me re-think my recent urge to join Costco.

Maybe it was just one Jack-Ass at this store.

Find a bunch of ‘fiction’ stickers and start plastering the Koran with them. Let’s see what happens.

Oh, I’m good for them. Here in the PNW a bus service had these pro Palestinian adverts. I made up a bunch of Israeli flag stickers and plastered those signs with them. The local pro Palestinian org. threw a hissy fit. I love what I do.

Costco is a big contributor to the Dem party, none to republicans. I dropped my membership years ago when that information came out.

I wouldn’t say Job is fiction. It may be the oldest book in the Bible but not fiction.

This is total BS.

Costco book tables are stacked with unlabeled boxes of books of all kinds, and the only sticker on any of them is the price (lowest in town).

Okay, not to doubt anyone but I have yet to see a book in Costco labeled fiction or non-fiction. Usually just a price tag.

Maybe it is different in other states?

There are Costcos with bookshelves? I admit I haven’t been in a while, but the ones I remember, except for a magazine rack, displayed the books on tables. And it’s not like they have a broad selection in any case, just lots of stock of the ones they do have.

The price tage are affixed automatically by the machinery that packages the books.

They have a price, and sometimes an item number, but not too often lately, they go by the SKU.

The Scriptures contain many literary forms: history, letters, hymns, poetry, and fiction, etc.

You deny this? For what reason?

Do you reject the proposition that a work of fiction can communicate truths?

Why would it be a problem if the Book of Job is fiction?

Why could it not be a piece of fiction inspired by the Holy Spirit, to teach truths the Holy Spirit desires to teach?

Are you seriously saying that Job MUST be a historical person, if the Book of Job is part of Scripture?

IOW, sample size = 1; it’s simply your opinion. You’ve got an opinion just like I’ve got an “editor-surveyor,” which reacts when I eat too much highly spiced food.

A work of fiction can communicate opinion, and nothing more.

Yehova’s word communicates all of the relevant facts of existence. No Fiction!

Costco apologizes for California bible flap
November 20, 2013

A Costco store in Southern California drew some unwanted attention this week after labeling some of its Bibles as fiction.

The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/18nVqRy) Wednesday that Discovery Church pastor Caleb Kaltenbach recently came across the Bibles with “Fiction” written on the price tag while shopping for a gift at a Costco store in Simi Valley. He took a photo and posted it on social media with the comment: “Costco has Bibles for sale under the genre of FICTION ...”

Costco has since apologized, saying in a statement a distributor mislabeled a small percentage of Bibles before they were sent to the store. The company said it is correcting the mistake for future distribution.

I checked the Concord store yesterday, and the Bibles there had only the price and the code.

They did have some books marked Fiction, and some marked “Coffee Table.”
