I was forced to survive on bread and water in Russian prison because it didn't serve vegetarian...

A Greenpeace campaigner claims he was forced to live on bread and water while being held in a Russian prison because it didn't offer a vegetarian alternative.

Antony Perrett arrived home yesterday after spending two months in prisons in Murmansk and St Petersburg for trying to hang a climate change banner on an oil rig.

The former town councillor is one a group of environmental activists known as the Arctic 30 who were being held in Russia on hooliganism charges.

Since being released under a new amnesty law, the 33-year-old has revealed he refused to eat some of the food offered to him behind bars.

'All the prison food had low grade meat of unknown origin in it. I'm a vegetarian and I lost a lot of weight,' he said from his home in Newport, South Wales.

Here in VT, they're screwing around with a guy that killed a couple, three people (for being dumped by his older female friend).

He started acting up in jail, so they put him on prison loaf. The lawyer started claiming "cruel and unusual".

Is that anything like public school mystery meat? If so , the lawyer has a point.

Back in the good old days they would bake A MONTHS worth of bread at a time.

To mix the dough the Bakers would pull up the trousers kick off their clogs, stomp the dough to the proper consistency.

Because sour dough takes forever to rise they would wander off drink and raise hell, come back stomp down the risen dough and then shape it, proof it then bake it.

Remember in the oldies you only bathed on Saturday, contributed to the strength of the barm,

Sounds to me like the russians were trying to teach him some nutrition lessons. Sort of like our school lunch program, but without the wookie. And they probably served better food.

Prison loaf is made from whatever that meal is, pureed, with binders added, and baked shaped or in a small loaf pan.

It's served unadorned on a paper plate, with no utensils.

Apparently, it gets exceedingly boring to eat quite quickly.

Then again, there are limited things you can do to an PITA (throwing feces, urine, etc) inmate.

The Russians don’t believe in country club prisons, telling inmates, “This is not a restaurant; you eat what’s on the table.”

There are many prisons around the world, that don't give them anything to eat. They should feel lucky they were fed at all.

Google it. Vegans are opposed to all animal products, including non-consumables, such as leather. Might as well look up vegetarian while you`re at it.

The distinction is not important to me. I bet it wasn't of any importance to the Russians, either.

Tried to amend my carnivorous habits
Made it nearly seventy days
Losin’ weight without speed, eatin’ sunflower seeds
Drinkin’ lots of carrot juice and soakin’ up rays

But at night I’d had these wonderful dreams
Some kind of sensuous treat
Not zucchini, fettucini or Bulgar wheat
But a big warm bun and a huge hunk of meat

Chorus:
Cheeseburger in paradise (paradise)
Heaven on earth with an onion slice (paradise)
Not too particular not too precise (paradise)
I’m just a cheeseburger in paradise

Heard about the old time sailor men
They eat the same thing again and again
Warm beer and bread they said could raise the dead
Well it reminds me of the menu at a holiday inn

Times have changed for sailors these days
When I’m in port I get what I need
Not just Havanas or bananas or daiquiris
But that American creation on which I feed

Chorus:
Cheeseburger in paradise (paradise)
Medium rare with mustard ‘be nice (paradise)
Heaven on earth with an onion slice (paradise)
I’m just a cheeseburger in paradise

I like mine with lettuce and tomato
Heinz 57 and french fried potatoes
Big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer
Well good god almighty which way do I steer for my

Chorus:
Cheeseburger in paradise (paradise)
Makin’ the best of every virtue and vice (paradise)
Worth every damn bit of sacrifice (paradise)
To get a cheeseburger in paradise
To be a cheeseburger in paradise
I’m just a cheeseburger in paradise

You asked. The distinction is relevant to all the posters who remarked about his being vegetarian and owning a leather couch. Whatever.

If he had been served the salmon patties we used to get every Friday at school, he’d have been out slaughtering a cow pretty quick!
