Holder's new school discipline guidelines: stop targeting minorities

(AP) Gov't: End overly zealous discipline in schools By KIMBERLY HEFLING AP Education Writer WASHINGTON The Obama administration is urging schools to abandon overly zealous discipline policies that civil rights advocates have long said lead to a school-to-prison pipeline that discriminates against minority students.

The wide-ranging series of guidelines issued Wednesday in essence tells schools that they must adhere to the principle of fairness and equity in student discipline or face strong action if they don't. The American Civil Liberties Union called the recommendations "ground-breaking."

"A routine school disciplinary infraction should land a student in the principal's office, not in a police precinct," Attorney General Eric Holder said.

Holder said the problem often stems from well intentioned "zero-tolerance" policies that too often inject the criminal justice system into the resolution of problems. Zero tolerance policies, a tool that became popular in the 1990s, often spell out uniform and swift punishment for offenses such as truancy, smoking or carrying a weapon. Violators can lose classroom time or become saddled with a criminal record.

Police have become a more common presence in American schools since the shootings at Columbine High School in 1999.

TOPICS: Education
KEYWORDS: dumb
Its the color of their skin that gets them in trouble, not their actions which happen to mirror society almost perfectly, ie: black men are X times more likely to commit violent crimes than other races. But with these radicals in charge at Justice and the White House, facts don't matter, only protecting their own.

Freepers (including me), have been railing against these idiotic "zero tolerance" policies in schools for years.

Holder is a loathsome, disgusting racist, but there is nothing in what he says here that I can disagree with.

It's not just about minorities. A lot of white kids have run afoul of zero tolerance policies too, and have suffered because of it.

Well he IS right about that, a pity its only to shell argument to call for more racist policies. It's ironic, considering "zero-tolerance" or more appropriately "zero-intelligence" policies were manufactured by the left in the wake of Columbine to take any sort of common sense rule enforcement from the hands of teachers and principles. So you end up in situations where some kid who forgot to take his pocket knife out his pocket before he went to school has to be treated the same as a kid who brings a loaded handgun to school under "zero tolerance" weapons policies.

Is it any wonder that schools have to call in the police when you see the utube of the little tyke being taunted and taught to swear? This is what ends up in primary school and any teacher and classroom stuck with them is going to go thru hell. How are they supposed to handle this man made animal?

You're right, the headline is a little misleading.

Ridiculous zero tolerance policies need to be reformed.

But Holder is still a corrupt racist bastard.

The implication of this report is that the Principals and teachers in govt schools are racists. If so why havent they been punished? Where is the response from the teacher’s union to this slander??

it is their actions that get them into trouble ... but if the racist regime in WashDC gets its way, it will be the color of the kids’ skin that protects them from any corrective or instructional assistance... so that the kids will continue on their paths to lives of ignorance, crime, violence, drugs, and dependency

way to go, Obama/Holder! More dangerous and “useful” idiots for your (eventual, coming soon to a neighborhood near you) Brown Shirts brigades

You won’t find the word “education” in the Constitution. There’s a reason for that: education is not a power given to the federal government. States should break the educational chains that bind them to the federal government.

Could not agree more. I am a teacher at an alternative school. We get all the rejects from the district. We hate zero tolerance. We have some kids who really aren't too bad over here for stupid stuff. Too much law enforcement involvement also. We are really becoming a police state.
Also we do have some teachers who know how to “push” kids buttons if they don't like the kid. It's not right but it does happen. Humans act like that sometimes.
Zero tolerance is just a way for the administration and the school boards to get a free pass on discipline. No matter the reason for the infraction the punishment is the same. Stupid. They don't have to actually decide on individual cases as they should. Just makes their jobs easier and less drama for them. Not fairness for the student involved.
I don't get invited to many meeting because I tell them what I think. Works for me as they are a waste of my time.

"A routine school disciplinary infraction should land a student in the principal's office, not in a police precinct," Attorney General Eric Holder said.

This sort of policy is what kept Trayvon Martin's drug issues and his backpack full of stolen jewelry and burglar tools out of the news and allowed the media to push the poor little innocent boy angle of their story.

You can see why Holder embraces the policy.
