Titanic iceberg simulator in Chinese theme park 'in bad taste'

...a Northern Ireland politician has said.

The attraction in Sichuan province, about 930 miles from the sea, will let hundreds of people at a time experience the shipwreck.

The Titanic was built in east Belfast.

Former Lord Mayor of Belfast Jim Rodgers said he had asked the Chinese firm behind the 1bn yuan (£100.7m) project to reconsider their plans.

He said that while it was a "great idea" to build the Titanic replica at the Romandisea Seven Star International Cultural Tourism Resort, "to have a simulation of an iceberg collision is going a step too far".

No, what’s funny is the T-shirt I have:

Titanic Swim team 1912...

A friend gave it to me as a joke after I described a swim I did when I was 16.

Seemed stupid to him but, since he wasn’t there it was funny.

Today, a wealthy friend owns a home right where I did that dumb swim and I’d do it again...In October, when there is no riptide like there was that day.

The Chinese are becoming capitalists and the west is becoming sappy socialists.

RE :”Today, a wealthy friend owns a home right where I did that dumb swim and I’d do it again...In October, when there is no riptide like there was that day.”

IN the 1990s I got really good at swimming as I got a season pass every summer for a huge open water swimming hole, a flooded rock Quarry. Its called Beaver Dam Swim club in Cockeysville Maryland and it was the greatest place in the world in summer those days.

Every Sept when still hot we would go down Ocean City Assateague Island camping on beach and swim out miles with no lifeguard every morning and afternoon.,

It was such a thrill to feel so comfortable so far out in the water, we also did some night swimming.

Well back in 2000 due to a cold very rainy summer I got little practice that year, we went down to Ocean city in Sept and I went out when it was windy and the waves were huge.

This was the first time I thought “I may die here” as the huge waves crashed down me and I struggled to swim back up for some air.

I managed to stay calm so as not to surely drown and I worked my way in slowly, heart racing and out of breath.

It took a while after that before I felt comfortable in deep water again. That was a close one.

I know of that swim.

I use to live in Greenville/Centerville, DE.

I’d spend summer at Rehobeth/Lowes and walk the board walk.

Yer a lucky bass terd.

I always wanted to do that swim.

my friends thought it was crazy.

I replied “Uhm, the horses do it and I’m a considerably better swimmer”.

One dork responded “Well, they are better swimmers naturally”

“Yeah” I snidely responded “Tell Mark Spitz. I ain’t never seen horses racing against a man”...

I should go back and do that swim.

If you are still in the area next year I’ll ping you and we’ll do it together with the other morons who do it each year.

Besides, that water is way warmer than the waters of Santa Cruz, CA.

Sounds like a tough day.

Mine took me almost a mile downshore, as I swam perpendicular to the shoreline and plane out to keep the rip tide off me.

I was tired and once I reached the shore I ran back to my friends who wanted to know why I swam all the way past the natural bridge.

I blew it off, knowing I got lucky to have been trained on that just a week before and told them what happened.

I was known as “Idiot”, respectfully, for the rest of they day as we scoped out girls on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

Fried artichoke hearts and french fries where so damn good that day.

Worked up an appetite...

RE Sounds like a tough day.

I was the exact opposite of the others, swimming way out relaxed feeling like the Ocean water was my comfy bed. That really felt good, to feel like I mastered the Ocean,

That next year I had hardly swam at all

I was gasping for breath and those huge waves would crash and shove me under and it took time to figure out which ways was up to get some air..

I would reach the surface and breath fast for ~ 30 seconds ??? before the next one hit again.

Only my experience at past swimming when in better shape saved me.

My exact thought was 'If I panic now I will die' I now recall.

LOL

Been there.

Do you still live in the area?

Would you consider swimming it again?

I’m going back to DE, NJ and NY to visit friends next year and taking that swim(after the horses?) would be kewel.

Next up on the theme park list: Concentration Coaster! Get temporary number tattoo as you grab your ticket, get forcibly stripped to your skivvies as you board, and enjoy the shower-filled fun! But watch out for Hitler!

Or the Tiananmen Square Massacre "fun house". Now THERE the ChiComs will never go. Also the "Cultural Revolution" and the so-called "Great Leap Forward". Something like 70 million dead as a result of the last 2. Maybe a thousand or so at TS.

The one in Pigeon Forge TN has the iceberg already having hit the ship and water spouting....so far as I know, neither the iceberg nor the ship can move. When they were building it I thought that might have been the plan, but apparently not.

If I spent several million on an attraction and then someone over in China one-upped me, I’d be upset too.
