In the wake of storms like Katrina, Irene, and Sandy, even stubborn New Yorkers are realizing that Mother Nature packs a punch, and that most people aren't ready to roll with it. This, combined with rising concerns about economic troubles ans a bumbling government, has caused a flood of newbie preppers to take to the stores, eagerly looking for the security of stored food, water, and medicines.
The prospect can be daunting, especially if you're trying to prep on your own or for a small group. Often, the biggest mistake new preppers can make is looking too far from home for the supplies they need.

Has everyone discovered the “oxygen absorber” trick of buying “Hot Hands” when they go on sale either right before hunting season or right after?
Same stuff - iron filings. “Hot Hands” don’t have a CC rating on them, though.
Just make sure you have enough water for all the beans, rice, pasta, dehydrated vegetables and instant soup.
I believe he’s already gotten himself re-incarcerated.

BTW, Quick Oats are cheap and can be prepared without heating, by putting the oats in a canning jar, add water, even room temp water, and a pinch of salt, put the top on, and in a couple of hours you have oatmeal to add peanut butter to and a handful of raisins. Use twice amount of water to oats. I’ve tested it. It works like a charm. If you have a means to heat water, the process is even quicker using boiling water without putting the oats in the water heating container.
Good advice. However there have been some changes.
LDS Church Clarifies Concerns About Rumored Cannery Shutdowns
"In all but 12 of the church's 101 home storage centers in the U.S. and Canada, patrons will no longer self-can products, but they may purchase these same items pre-canned or prepackaged at no additional cost.
The church currently operates 101 home storage centers in the United States and Canada where food storage items such as beans, dry milk, wheat, rice and sugar may be purchased. These changes have been considered for some time as the church has looked at the best way to provide home storage goods to church members efficiently.
There are good reasons for moving away from self-canning, the church said in its statement. It's more efficient and cost effective to produce and ship prepackaged goods in bulk rather than ship the same goods and empty cans to a location for people to can on their own. This also means less warehouse space and fewer facilities to maintain, which will save money.
Safety is a factor, according to the church. Pre-canned and prepackaged operations guarantee higher quality and safer preparation of food.
