Archaeologists from around the UK have been examining a hoard of treasures unearthed in a 4,000-year-old tomb on Dartmoor.

Prehistoric jewellery, animal pelts and beads made of amber were among the finds about two years ago in the burial chamber.

The chamber, known as a cist, was found on Whitehorse Hill, near Chagford.

I love the Wilts. White Horse hill is a wonderful place. Surprised this is a more recent find since the area is so well travelled on foot

Lots of interesting aspects to this 2011 discovery, for example the find included amber which isn’t found within 1000 miles of Dartmoor and previous to this discovery only 8 or 9 prehistoric beads had been found there. Here it was at least 150 beads. The woven bag that had contained the beads and the leather bag with the human remains were in excellent condition. Also they discovered layers of volcanic ash - if this involved an eruption from a volcano in Iceland the ash fall would have had to travel a heck of a long way - it would be like if Mt. St Helens deposited ash in Pennsylvania.

The objects were pulled from a prehistoric cremation burial chamber (pictured) in Devon and have allowed scientists to get one of the best glimpses into life in Bronze Age Southern England

I suspect Hadrian's Wall is holding them back.
