Proposal to divide California into 6 states moves step closer to voter consideration
Daily Journal ^ | 02/20/2014 | MICHAEL R. BLOOD

LOS ANGELES — California has reached the breaking point. Or so says Tim Draper, a Silicon Valley venture capitalist who is pushing a proposal to crack the nation's most populous state into pieces.

Six of them, in this case.

California has grown so big, so divided, it's essentially ungovernable, according to a ballot initiative that could reach voters in November.

It has to go.

"Vast parts of our state are poorly served by a representative government," according to Draper's plan, which cleared a key government hurdle this week to qualify for the ballot. California residents "would be better served by six smaller state governments."

No one would dispute that California, home to 38 million people, is full of rivalries and squabbling. Dodgers or Giants. Tacos or sushi. Where water goes, and how much of it.

But the state has proven reliably resilient against attempts to split it apart, dating to the era of its founding in 1850. Over the years, proposals have suggested California should be two states, or three, or four.

So.... since I live in Sonoma County, I would be in “North California”.

I have no idea if this would help or hurt me.???

So, it’s a good idea to give those people 12 senators, rather than 2? That would reduce its reach? No thanks.

I don’t think the desert regions in the northern section of the proposed South California would be too happy, they should be part of Central California, although the eastern section (where I live) of Central Calif has little to no contact with the western section of central part due to the 14,000 Sierra Nevada forming a huge fence (with only two road crossings, open in Summer only) between the two areas. Totally different cultures.

I say let’s make every zip code a state and be done with it. The rise in the number of senators, congressmen, and staffers would solve the unemployment problem.

BOY!!!!!!

‘They’ will go to ANY lengths to make BO’s 57 states statement a truth, not a boneheaded statement by a bonehead.

One (maybe two) of the new states would be conservative. The rest would elect Boxer clones.

This is a terrible idea.

Not really an unreasonable theory...

Remember, the oBummerCare forced a lot of companies to drop to under 30 hours, next they will raise the work week from 40 to 50 hours a week, and with the companies hiring TWO complete shifts, the unemployment rate should drop considerably.

Someone made an excellent point the other day.

The maladministration is claiming that the work force has recovered from the ‘massive recession’ and the number of ‘workers’ is back where it was 5 years ago.

Ok, say this is true —— IF IT IS, wouldn’t that mean the unemployment rate would STILL be the same as it was 5 years ago, yet they are claiming the % is almost half what it was 5 years ago.

It continues to get more ‘cornfusing’ every day.

CA is not as liberal as it seems.
Silicon Valley houses most liberals and they would be corralled together.
I am totally on board with this move

This would mean 2 conservative senators and most likely 8 liberals. No thank you.

Interesting splits. I’d be quite interested in projected voting patterns. I’m assuming that They’ve made sure enough large cities are in each region to keep them all democrat.

Actually, this proposal is quite good, but the details are all wrong. First, as the proposed map is drawn, there is a likelihood that there would be an increase in liberal states.

Better than this would be THREE states, one of which has already been proposed, the state of Jefferson in the far north, and would likely include every county to the north of Sacramento.

The second reasonable state would be south of Sacramento inland of the coast range of mountains to the Nevada/Arizona border.

The third, which for purposes of calling it liberal paradise, could retain the name California, and be the harrow, ultra-liberal strip of land from north of the Orange County line (Including all of the LA Basin) through Marin county to the north of the Gay Bay, and would include Sacramento County.

That would make four new senators, most likely conservative and would move at about half of Ca's electors in presidential elections into the red column.

Has anyone figured out how this would play out with Electoral votes? As things stand now, California’s 55 votes are in the Democrat column right from the get-go. I would have to think that this plan would peel some of them off, even taking into an account a possible net increase in Dem senators.

If anyone has actually run the numbers (based, I presume, on 2012 results) I’d love to see it.

You’re not looking at how these proposed states are gerrymandered. All but one will be dominated by a large, liberal city. This is nothing more than a plan to give the Democrat Party and the public employees’ unions 10 more US Senators.

Riverside and Orange counties are very conservative.
I seen other blue red maps that show CA nearly all red except for SF, Sacramento and the city of LA.
