Killing swans is a bad idea

"Take a good look at them," I said, "because the state plans to exterminate them."

I kind of agree with the department's main reason for exterminating New York state's resident mute swans (by the way, that's the species' name, because they're usually silent).

Non-native species often pose problems. I just have two problems with the plan. One, I don't think mute swans are really too much of a threat to anything or anyone in New York state. They live mainly on Long Island and the lower Hudson, with a few on the Great Lakes. They number just around 2,200 birds, total, in the whole state. Not exactly a plague.

"Those are stupid reasons," she said, demanding to know who is planning to kill them.

I told her it's the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

More government running amok... wanting and succeeding in ruling everything.

"Comments on the draft mute swan plan may be submitted today to the NYSDEC Bureau of Wildlife, Swan Management Plan, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233-4754 or by e-mail to: fwwildlf@gw.dec.state.ny.us."

At least in England, the swans belong to the Queen and you daren’t touch them!

Here are some swans with nasty dispositions that need to be exterminated:

Someone who hasn't seen one wipe out a flock of ducklings or goslings while leaving a trail of headless bodies in the water.

So you have one aggressive swan, that’s no reason to exterminate ALL swans.

I am still watching the video - the swan is not really attacking, maybe it just wants to be fed or be friends.

There was something on TV about a duck that “adopted” and followed a man and waited for him to show up every day.

Check out some more of his videos (there are over a dozen.) No friendly intent with those swans!

Sure, one swan wipes out a flock of ducklings, eating their heads... Actually the aliens did that...

Mute swans have made "dead" areas of the Chesapeake Bay. They eat the submerged vegetation (and have voracious appetites for it) which renders it a dead zone.

Virginia has tackled the problem by allowing the mute swans to be hunted.

They also displace native shore birds and have no natural predators.

Pretty to look at - but we should never allowed them to be imported.

Not an issue on Long Island. They mostly live on ponds created for the now-defunct duck-farming industry.

Had a similar situation on vacation in Austria long ago...
Eating lunch by the lake and the swans came up and tried to take the food out of our hands while we were eating.

Didn’t dare swat them away because I didn’t know if I’d end up in jail over it.

There would probably be a hunting season on them around here but its hard to spot the difference between trumpeter swans and muties from more than a few feet away.

The DNR quietly eliminated nearly 60 of them from the lake I live on a few years back and now the population is nearly at the same level again.

Sounds like the perfect solution to the illegal alien geese from Canada and the year round ducks which are making our reservoirs vast e coli pools.

The left wing idiots in control of our drinking water reservoirs will fine a kayaker for getting their feet/boots a little wet to launch a kayak. Yet, they have zero problem with hundreds of illegal year round geese from Canada, dropping their massive amounts of goose poop each day in our drinking water reservoirs.

I lived on the water of Long Island for 20 years and never saw them attack anything unless it got close to one of their kids. Even then, it was to scare them away.

I have seen swans fight each other, and Canada geese will fight each other to death.

The Enviro-NAZIs at work again.

Exterminate all non-native species.

One pair of mute swans keeps away Canada geese hords along with their poop. But I guess Cuomo likes poop. He creates so much of it when he speaks.

1. The government should do less, not more.

2. This guy is a dork — swans are killers.
