Cure for love: Fall for a robot to fend off heartache
New Scientist ^ | 2-14-14 | Catherine de Lange

Posted on 02/23/2014 7:10:39 PM PST by ReformationFan

At least the bride was definitely going to show up. In November 2009, a Japanese man stood before a congregation to marry the woman he loved, Nene Anegasaki. In doing so, he became the first man to marry a computer game character – Nene is one of three "virtual girlfriends" in the Nintendo DS game Love Plus.

The marriage might not be recognised by the state, but to the groom, who goes by his on-screen name Sal9000, the relationship is very real. In the months leading up to the wedding the couple went everywhere together, they chatted intimately, held hands and Sal fell in love. After the wedding, he took Nene on honeymoon, then home to meet his parents.

Sal says he is in love with the character rather the machine, and presumably he's not alone – over 250,000 copies of Love Plus have been sold in Japan since it launched in 2009.

Spike Jonze's latest film Her takes the idea further, depicting a future in which phone operating systems are advanced enough to substitute a real romance. So just how likely are we to fall in love with a machine?

I had forgotten about Mudd, an intergalactic ne’er do well.

His model played by Sherry Jackson was simply beautiful.

Yeah, but I don’t recall any romance in particular in that episode. “Requiem for Methuselah” actually had Kirk falling for the fembot, and needing a mind-meld to cure his broken heart.

I agree. There ere many wonderful examples of feminine pulchritude on Star Trek.

I’m gonna buy a paper doll, that I can call my own
A doll that other fellas cannot steal
And then the flirty, flirty guys - with all their flirty, flirty eyes
Will have to flirt with dollies, that are real

When I come home at night - she will be waiting
She’ll be the truest doll in all this world
I’d rather have a paper doll, to call my own
Then have a fickle minded - real live girl

corrects a few typos and corrects punctuation:

I’m gonna buy a paper doll that I can call my own
A doll that other fellas cannot steal
And then the flirty, flirty guys with their flirty, flirty eyes
Will have to flirt with dollies that are real

When I come home at night she will be waiting

“Wasn’t there a Twilight Zone episode about this?”

Yep. Rod Serling (sp?) had some vision, didn’t he? Almost prophetic.

I saw Cherry 2000 several months ago on the cable TV. I enjoy watching some dumb free movie I have never heard of before heading off to bed. I suppose it was on the low-budget side, but I thought the story was really good. I enjoyed it.

I love you sincerely
Yours truly, yours truly

I sent a message to another time
But as the days unwind, this I just can’t believe
I send a note across another plane
Maybe it’s all a game but this I just can’t conceive

I drive the very latest Hover car,
I don’t know where you are?
But I miss you so much till then
I met someone who looks a lot like you
She does the things you do but she is an IBM

I love you sincerely
Yours truly, yours truly

She’s only programmed to be very nice
But she’s as cold as ice whenever I get too near
She tells me that she likes me very much
But when I try to touch she makes it all too clear

She is the latest in technology
Almost mythology but she has a heart of stone
She has an I.Q. of one thousand and one
She has a jump suit on and she’s also a telephone

I love you sincerely
Yours truly, yours truly

Is that what you want?
Is it what you really want?
Is that what you want?
Is it what you really want?

I realize that it must seem to strange
That time has rearranged but time has the final word
She knows I think of you, she reads my mind
She tries to be unkind, she knows nothing of your world

Although her memory banks overflow
No one would ever know, for all she says, “Is that what you want?”
Maybe one day I’ll feel her cold embrace
And kiss her interface, until then I’ll leave her alone

I love you sincerely
Yours truly, yours truly

Is that what you want?
Is it what you really want?
Is that what you want?
Is it what you really want?
Is that what you want?
